CERC responds to proposed changes to Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program

CanadaProposed changes to Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program could have significant implications for employers who access the program. In addition to placing limits on the amount of time a foreign worker may stay in Canada, the regulations will consider "the past compliance of an employer with the federal or provincial laws that regulate employment" when reviewing an application under the program.

Why Santa rocks at innovation

Santa_hatIt's likely a good time to put into perspective the critical lessons we can learn from someone who is a true master of leadership, insight, creativity and innovation. None other than the jolly old fellow himself! Santa is an innovation master. Analyze his leadership style, and his operational insight, motivational style, approach to creativity, forward thinking orientation, or any other management trait, and he has it nailed.

CEOs support foreign credential recognition

COMPAS IncA recent poll of Canadian CEOs conducted by COMPAS concluded that the principal benefits to business of foreign trained professionals are an increase in the supply of skilled personnel along with an increase in the number of employees with new ideas and diverse experiences.

Early Repatriation Study

RyersonThe Canadian Employee Relocation Council (CERC) and the Ted Rogers School of Business of Ryerson University have teamed up to conduct an in-depth investigation into the underlying reasons for early returns from international assignments.

The study will expand on existing information obtained from industry surveys by asking employees who have returned early to provide specific, detailed information about their own experiences.
Results of the study will be released in 2010

Housing market strong

According to The Canadian Real Estate Association, existing home sales activity remained upbeat in November 2009. The current strength of housing demand stands in sharp contrast to weak activity recorded one year ago.

A total of 36,383 residential properties traded hands via the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) of Canadian real estate boards in November 2009. Up 73 per cent from year-ago levels, activity was down just four tenths of a per cent from the highest level of activity for the month posted in November 2007. Home sales set new records for the month of November in Ontario and Quebec.

Employment Outlook Survey

According to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, employers expect a hopeful hiring climate for the first quarter of 2010. With seasonal variations removed from the survey data, the Net Employment Outlook of 13 per cent indicates employers anticipate a favourable hiring climate in the upcoming quarter. This forecast improves six percentage points from the previous quarter when employers reported a seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of seven per cent.
