CERC E-News

April 23, 2009 Vol 6, Edition 4
Greetings!

Spring is bursting out across the country and with it perhaps we're seeing early signs of economic recovery.  I've spoken to many members in all areas of the country over the past few months and amid the bad economic news and predictions, there is a sense of optimism and strong attitude of resilience.

Looking ahead is the key reason why CERC is hosting its third annual workforce symposia "Building Canada's Workforce for the New Economy" - June 3 in Toronto, and June 9 in Calgary. These events will feature an exclusive keynote address by noted business broadcaster and economist Linda Nazareth, who'll help us to make sense of the chaos that surrounds us. We've also assembled a stellar faculty of thought leaders; leaders who will share their ideas about the future and explore what employers need to do to develop the talent needed to compete tomorrow. I encourage you to promote this event among your colleagues and friends.

The program for CERC's 2009 conference, New Challenges - New Solutions from September 27 to 29 in Ottawa is now complete. The conference has been designed to meet challenges of the uncertain times we are currently in. With a faculty of world class speakers and real life case studies, this conference promises to be one of the best in CERC's 27 year history.

View the preliminary agenda.

PS: Don't forget to participate in CERC's Member Get-A-Member Campaign. Just refer a new corporate member and you'll have a chance to win a free pass to our 2009 conference in Ottawa, including three nights accommodation!

Best Regards,
Steve

Tending to Talent in a Downturn

Many industries today are facing enormous demographic, economic and competitive challenges. Talent management has become a growing concern and recruitment offices are stretched more than ever, as companies struggle to handle the double whammy of an increase in applicants and a decrease in budget. Still, industries like energy and healthcare continue to grow.

New Citizenship Law for Canada

Canada's new citizenship law went into effect on April 17. The law restores or gives citizenship to many who lost it or didn't have it due to outdated provisions in past legislation. It also protects the value of Canadian citizenship for the future by limiting citizenship by descent.

Earlier this year CERC expressed concerns to the Minister that the changes will have  negative consequences for the many families that live and work overseas on behalf of Canadian organizations.

Canada EU Labour Mobility

The next round of free trade discussions between the government of Canada and representatives of the European Union get under way in Prague in May. It is expected those discussions, will also include provisions for a labour mobility agreement. The objective for such an agreement is to facilitate professional labour mobility and to establish a common skilled labour market between the two territories.

CERC is assisting the Canada Europe Roundtable for Business (CERT) in developing the issues to be considered in discussions for a labour mobility agreement.

This could have a tremendous positive benefit for our member firms. CERC welcomes your suggestions to the issues outlined in this discussion paper.

Home Sales Stabilize

According to statistics released by The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) existing MLS® home sales activity increased for the second month in a row in March 2009. The number of new listings also continued trending lower in March, which firmed up the balance of supply to demand.

Canada Tops in Expat Survey

According to HSBC expat survey, when it comes to making friends with the locals Canada tops the list. Canada is the friendliest location for expats, where most found it easy to build relationships with local people, followed by Germany and Australia.

Germany came out as a popular destination for expats to marry someone from the local population, followed by the Netherlands.
