Greetings!
In this edition we take a look at some of the emerging trends impacting our industry. News in the housing markets is showing some positive signs, while on the employment front, the situation is less encouraging with more job losses being reported in both Canada and the US.
While we can't change the economic situation we can help members prepare for a future after the recovery. Mark your calendars for June 3, Toronto and June 9, Calgary when CERC hosts its symposia on Canada's Future Workforce. We've assembled a line up of industry experts who will explore what employers need to do to develop and have access to the talent necessary to compete in the future. Watch your inbox for more details on these events.
The CERC 2009 conference, New Challenges - New Solutions September 27 to 29 in Ottawa is designed to meet challenges of the uncertain times we are currently in.
Despite all of the negative news, we know our members need access to the best tools to help them survive these times intact...and I believe this year's conference planning committee has delivered a program that does just that. With a faculty of world class speakers and real life case studies, this conference promises to be one of the best in CERC's 27 year history.
The conference program will deliver practical skills and learning opportunities that ALL delegates can implement in their workplaces immediately...it will be a conference no organization with mobility programs and services can afford to miss.
PS: Don't forget to participate in CERC's Member Get-A-Member Campaign. Just refer a new corporate member and you'll have a chance to win a free pass to our 2009 conference in Ottawa, including three nights accommodation!
Best Regards, Steve Stephen Cryne President, CERC

Ontario budget impacts housing market
Harmonized provincial and federal sales tax measures included in Ontario's provincial budget will increase new home costs. To soften the blow, new homes under $400,000 would not be subject to an additional tax burden. Resale homes would not be subject to the single sales tax, however under a harmonized sales tax (HST), home buyers and sellers will have to pay extra tax on a range of services associated with real estate transactions such as legal fees, moving costs, real estate commissions and home inspection fees. Currently, consumers only pay the 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on these services. According to the Ontario Real Estate Association this change will add about $2,000 to the cost of transacting a sale in Ontario. Read more |
Expats hearing call from their companies to come home
According to this article, gone are the days an up-and-coming midlevel executive could anticipate spending a few years in London, Tokyo or Hong Kong to pick up management experience and some international savoir-faire. Companies have been eliminating international postings solely for career development purposes and making other cuts to curb expatriate program costs for the better part of a decade, but the economy's free fall pushed changes into overdrive, say corporate HR executives and expat program management consultants.

Adding value through immigration
Ajit Someshwar, CEO of Toronto-based technology and staffing firm CSI Consulting Inc., is a member of a high-profile economic advisory committee that's advising Flaherty on ways to offset the global recession. But Someshwar also wants the immigration ministry to help Canada capitalize on its ties with his native India and open our doors to more professionals. "We have several instances of doctors driving cabs - or ultimately going back," says Someshwar. "We can line up - from one end of the street to the other - people who are working way below what they're supposed to be doing." Read more | |
Recession prompts a rat race re-evaluation
A recent global survey by Kelly Services has identified a startling symmetry in terms of what workers want from life, with the long-term goal of many being to do something more fulfilling, even if that means accepting a cut in pay. Read more |
