Greetings!
Amidst all of the bad economic news there are some bright spots. This edition features an interesting article about Canada's new powerhouse province, and a link to a report from the University of Toronto that looks at Ontario's future.
And looking to the future, mark you calendars for Toronto - June 3, and Calgary - June 9, when CERC will again host its symposia on Canada's Future Workforce. While we can't change the economic situation we can help members prepare for a future after the recovery. The symposia will explore the measures needed to ensure Canadian organizations have the talent necessary to compete in the future.
I recently came across a quote and think it's appropriate in today's environment where training and development budgets are often the first things to be cut.
"An organization's ability to learn and translate that learning into action is the ultimate competitive advantage."-- Jack Welch, ex-CEO, GE
Best Regards, Steve Stephen Cryne President, CERC

Canada's Immigration levels rise in 2008
The government of Canada admitted 247,202 immigrants in 2008, well above the 236,000 admitted in 2007. Economic class immigrants accounted for 60% of all immigration to Canada in 2008. According to the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, Jason Kenney targets for 2009 will remain on track. "Our government will not follow the advice of those who believe that Canada should take steps to reduce immigration levels" said Minister Kenney.

Canada's new economic powerhouse
Here's the story: it is more than likely that in 2009, only two Canadian provinces will post positive economic growth. Only two out of all ten. Go ahead, make a guess. Are you thinking that Alberta must be one of the two? No-think again. British Columbia? No-wrong as well...

Ontario in the creative age
Despite the current economic environment, Ontario is well positioned to compete and prosper in the ongoing global economic transformation. While the economic environment has worsened in the past year, the current upheaval only accelerates the longer-term trends - especially the shift from more routine-oriented to creativity-oriented jobs. Yet Ontario can do more to ensure it is a globally competitive jurisdiction. That is the key conclusion from the report Ontario in the Creative Age. Read more |
Managing talent in a recession
Change has happened so fast, that many organizations are experiencing paralysis; they are slow to respond and take action. In the current economic climate, it is necessary to take a step back and evaluate and revise workforce plans, talent acquisition processes, technology approaches, and marketing strategies to ensure they are still relevant and effective in the new recruiting reality. Home sales to decline in 2009
National home sales activity is expected to decline in 2009 before rebounding in 2010, according to a new residential housing forecast prepared by The Canadian Real Estate Association. National sales activity declined 17.1 per cent in 2008, and sales activity is forecast to fall an additional 16.9 per cent to 360,900 units in 2009. We've all had the experience. We see someone going through a difficult time and we just don't know what to say. Or, we sit down to write a note of condolence and our mind goes blank. These days, with millions of jobs lost worldwide, and trillions of dollars of personal and business wealth vanished, it is easy to have the same reaction when communicating with customers. What can we say that can make a difference given all that has happened? Read more |
How the crash will reshape America
The crash of 2008 continues to reverberate loudly nationwide-destroying jobs, bankrupting businesses, and displacing homeowners. But already, it has damaged some places much more severely than others. On the other side of the crisis, America's economic landscape will look very different than it does today. What fate will the coming years hold for New York, Charlotte, Detroit, Las Vegas? Will the suburbs be ineffably changed? Which cities and regions can come back strong? And which will never come back at all.
