Greetings!
The Canadian government's budget tabled on January 27, did not contain any changes to the treatment of relocation benefits and moving allowances. This is disappointing since the changes CERC had proposed to the Minister of Finance could have delivered a positive impact in today's weak economy. We will continue to press for changes in this area.
The budget does contain more money for skills recognition programs that will help immigrants and employers. This is a positive and welcome move.

$50m for skills assessment

Changes in citizenship rules
Recently announced changes to the Canadian Citizenship Act that will come into effect on April 17, 2009 may have negative consequences for the many families that live and work overseas on behalf of Canadian organizations. According to the CIC website, children born in another country after the new law comes into effect, will not be Canadian citizens by birth if they were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent who was also born outside Canada to a Canadian parent. The number of properties sold via the MLS® systems of real estate boards in Canada edged down further in December 2008 to reach the lowest level for the month since December 2000, according to statistics released by The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). Seasonally adjusted residential MLS® sales activity numbered 27,357 units in December 2008, a decline of 1.8 per cent compared to the previous month. Read more |

Loans for business immigrants
Credit unions in Nova Scotia have developed a program that is intended to provide funding to new immigrants who have an interest in starting, expanding, or buying a small business in the province. The program, which makes loans of up to CAD$150,000 available to Canadian immigrants, facilitates the opportunity to own and operate small businesses, to establish roots in the province, and to contribute to Nova Scotia's prosperous economy.
