Greetings!
Welcome to another issue of The SADDvocate. Thanks to everyone who helped us win $100,000 from Cars.com last month! This month, you'll find a number of great activity ideas from our partners, last call for some exciting contests, and more. Our goal is to ensure that every SADD chapter has the latest news, so we're counting on you to help spread the word about The SADDvocate. Please encourage all of your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and email address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org. Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, in full color with graphics. You can view every issue in our online archive. This issue will be posted to the archive later today. A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page. Please "like" our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well! Links to all our social networking pages are on the bar at left. |
 | SADD National Won $100,000!
|
We were thrilled to have won $100,000 in the Cars.com Cares contest! As part of their Super Bowl outreach, Cars.com invited seven nonprofits to compete for a donation of up to $100,000 through Facebook voting and other social media efforts. We asked for your help, and you responded! Above, Cars.com's Ron Hall presents a check for $100,000 to SADD National's President and Executive Director Penny Wells and students from a number of Massachusetts SADD chapters in front of the SADD National offices in Marlborough, Massachusetts. We thank Cars.com for their incredibly generous donation, and thanks to all of you who helped support SADD during the contest. We truly appreciate it!

March 21 is the annual Kick Butts Day, sponsored by our friends at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. This is a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up, and seize control against tobacco. The Campaign would love to hear about your anti-tobacco activities on that day, so if you're running an activity, make sure to register it at kickbuttsday.org. Need some ideas? You'll find sample activities sorted by age group on the Kick Butts Day website. We hope your SADD chapter is planning an event! Could you use a FREE speaker on the topic of distracted driving? End Distracted Driving has trained hundreds of attorneys nationwide to deliver free presentations to high schools during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, with a goal to reach more than 100,000 students. To see if a speaker is available to come to your school, call toll-free 1-855-363-3478 or email info@EndDD.org. April 20-22 is also Global Youth Service Day. Sponsored by YSA, GYSD is the largest service event in the world, with millions of youth and adults in 100 countries on six continents changing the world through service. Need ideas for a service project? Check out SADD Serves: Youth Giving Back, our community service toolkit. Then make sure to register your project at gysd.org.

 | Chapter Toolbox - Prom Season
|
Each month, a member of the SADD National Student Leadership Council (SLC) writes a column designed to help chapters with activity ideas, meeting suggestions, and more. Greetings, SADDvocate readers. My name is Paige Meyer, and I serve on the SLC. I'm excited to share some thoughts and inspirations this month from my home state of Minnesota.
The SLC traveled to New York City in February to plan for the upcoming national conference and work on some exciting new projects. We had a wonderful time working and touring the Big Apple (we even had a special chance to bond while trapped for 45 minutes in our hotel elevator!). While there, we had a chance to talk about how SADD chapters can become more active. SADD is known for having prom safety as one of the biggest focuses of the entire year. Mock car crashes and Grim Reaper Day are wonderful traditional activities, but we know they only have a very short-term effect on behavior and can become repetitive if done every year. Your chapter could hold a town hall meeting for students and parents about these issues, work with parent groups to throw a safe after-prom party, with great activities and prizes for those who attend. The possibilities are endless if you get creative. For more ideas, check out SADD's Prom Toolkit, which has lots of resources for you. I'm really excited for the conference this year - we have some incredible things in store for you! I hope to see you there. Thanks for reading!
