Greetings!

Welcome to another issue of The SADDvocate!  Thanks to everyone who helped celebrate SADD's 30th anniversary last month.  This month, we're excited to announce key 2012 conference details!  From all of us at SADD National, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

Our goal is to ensure that every SADD chapter has the latest news, so we're counting on you to help spread the word about The SADDvocate.  Please encourage all of your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and email address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at [email protected]

Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, in full color with graphics.  You can view every issue in our online archive.  This issue will be posted to the archive later today.

A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page.  Please "like" our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well!  Links to all our social networking pages are on the bar at left.
SADD National Conference - Breaking News!
2012 conference logo We know you've been anxiously awaiting the details, so we're excited to announce that the 2012 SADD National Conference, The Prevention League: Discover Your Power, will be held June 24-27, 2012, at the Torrance Marriott South Bay hotel in Torrance, California (just south of Los Angeles).  This beautiful hotel is just two miles from the beach, 10 miles from the LAX airport, and adjacent to the Del Amo Fashion Center Mall, one of the largest in the country.

We're sure this will be an outstanding conference, with a sunny California location and an offsite trip to Disneyland!  The pricing for conference will be $799 for students (quad occupancy) and $899 for advisors (double occupancy).  This single price covers your hotel accommodations, all meals, exciting speakers, educational workshops, entertainment, and a trip to Disneyland - everything but your travel to Torrance.

Look for registration materials on the sadd.org website very soon.  Make your plans now to join us for this unforgettable experience!

We're also able to tell you that the 2013 SADD National Conference will be held in Washington, D.C., from June 23-26, 2013 (dates tentative).
SADD Celebrates 30 Years of Saving Lives!
November 30, 2011, was designated as SADD's official 30th birthday, and many of you joined the party!  Celebrations happened all across the United States, from our gala event in Boston to birthday cake in SADD chapter meetings.  Here are just a few highlights!

friends for life gala SADD National held the inaugural Friends for Life Gala on December 1 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.  The event celebrated SADD's 30 years of making a difference and honored Stephen Wallace with the SADD Chairman's Compass Award for his 15 years of service as SADD's Board Chairman, which concluded in June.  Corporate sponsors and individual donors, members of the SADD National Student Leadership Council, and SADD students from nine Massachusetts chapters attended the event, and a great time was had by all.

Westlake SADDMany chapters held celebrations, too.  Westlake High School SADD in Westlake, Ohio (pictured), made signs, balloon arches, and more to call attention to this milestone.  Bloomfield High School SADD in Bloomfield, New Jersey, took the opportunity to turn the 30th celebration into a recruitment event, offering the "Top 30 Reasons to Join SADD" in their school.

Battery Creek SADDWe asked you to obtain proclamations from local officials and many chapters did, including Battery Creek High School SADD in Beaufort, South Carolina (pictured), which received a proclamation honoring SADD from their County Council. In Shelbyville, Indiana, the Shelby County Drug-Free Coalition had an event with students from SADD chapters at county high schools to celebrate and receive a proclamation from the mayor.

States also recognized SADD, including Mississippi, where Governor Haley Barbour proclaimed November 30 as "SADD Day."  On the national level, in the House of Representatives, Congressman James McGovern (MA) introduced a resolution congratulating SADD, which was co-sponsored by a number of congressional representatives:
  • Madeleine Bordallo (Guam)
  • Michael Capuano (MA)
  • Alcee Hastings (FL)
  • Steve Israel (NY)
  • William Keating (MA)
  • Sander Levin (MI)
  • John Lewis (GA)
  • James Moran (VA)
  • Dutch Ruppersberger (MD)
  • Albio Sires (NJ)
  • Niki Tsongas (MA)
Thanks to all of you who reached out and contacted your representatives asking them to sign on.  These efforts really make a difference, and we encourage you to keep the lines of communication open with your representatives.

With your help, we're looking forward to many more years of SADD making a difference.  If your chapter held a creative birthday event, please share your story with us at [email protected]
Friends of SADD Chapter Contest
SADD decal SADD National exists to support chapters with information, resources, programming, and more.  As SADD celebrates 30 years of saving lives, we hope you'll join us by helping grow our "Friends of SADD" campaign.

We're excited to announce our Friends of SADD chapter contest.  Here's how it works - your chapter recruits adults (parents, teachers, coaches, relatives, and neighbors) to contribute $30 online at sadd.org/friends.htm in recognition and support of 30 years of empowering youth.  The contribution is tax-deductible, and each Friend will receive a SADD decal to display their support on their car, or in their home or business.

Your chapter fills out  a simple entry form telling us which Friends you recruited, and then sends it in.  The first 30 chapters to recruit 10 Friends will receive a $50 SADD Store gift certificate, and the chapter with the most Friends will receive a $100 certificate!  The contest runs until January 31.

We hope you'll help us recruit some new Friends (why not put it on your holiday wish list?) in honor of SADD's 30th anniversary!
Contests, Grants, and Awards

Is your chapter looking for activities and maybe some cash?  There are a number of contests underway now, including our Friends of SADD chapter contest noted above.

2012 AOL logo SADD chapters across the country are signing up for the 2012 Act Out Loud contest, vying to win the grand prize of $10,000!  The three-part contest consists of creating a t-shirt design about preventing the use of communication devices while driving; creating a sign about the graduated drivers license passenger restrictions in your state; and a Facebook challenge to get as many students as possible to install a special Act Out Loud application.  You have until January 31 to register, but why wait?  Sign up now and begin brainstorming!  Make sure to write "SADD" in the "National Organization Your Team Represents" field.  To register or learn more, visit actoutloud.org.

FTB logo Alcohol Justice (formerly the Marin Institute) is offering their Free the Bowl contest again this year.  Encourage the NFL to remove alcohol ads from the Super Bowl in a video using music, rap, dance, or spoken-word poetry.  You could win $1,000!  The deadline to enter is January 16.  Visit freethebowl.com to learn more.

PYL logo Project Yellow Light is a video PSA contest.  Make a 60-second video to encourage other teens not to text while driving, and you could win the grand prize of a $2,000 scholarship and have your video turned into a PSA by the Ad Council which will be distributed to 1,600 television stations!  Videos are due by March 31.  For more information, visit projectyellowlight.com.

YSA logo Our friends at YSA offer a number of grants and community service opportunities throughout the year.  Check out their latest grant opportunities, including the Sodexo Youth Grants, which offer $500 to complete a service project addressing childhood hunger on Global Youth Service Day in April.  The deadline to apply for this grant is January 17.  Be sure to enter "SADD" in the "Partner Code" field, so your application gets a priority review.

Chapter Toolbox - Drugged Driving
toolboxEach month, a member of the SADD National Student Leadership Council (SLC) writes a column designed to help chapters with activity ideas, meeting suggestions, and more.

Sierra headshotWhat's up, SADD peeps?  My name is Sierra Davila, and I'm a member of the SLC.  I am a freshman at Kansas State University, and I'm majoring in psychology with a focus on neuroscience.

It's finally December!  That means we're all looking forward to holiday celebrations and spending time with friends and family.  I know as a busy college student, I am SO looking forward to going home and relaxing.  However, before we start celebrating, we need to remember that December is also 3D Month!  No, we're not raising awareness about cool movies that jump out at you; 3D Month is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Month (3 "D"s - get it?).  President Obama has now renamed this month "National Impaired Driving Prevention Month."

We all know about the dangers of drunk driving or texting while driving.  But there hasn't been a lot of focus on driving while you're "high," and it's a bigger problem than you may think.  According to the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 10.6 million people reported driving under the influence of marijuana and other illicit drugs last year and as many as 20 percent of all crashes are caused by drivers under the influence of drugs!  I'll admit that sometimes I make mistakes as a driver, and I'm 100% sober.  Imagine the mistakes you could make while driving under the influence on an icy road!

Your chapter can call attention to the issue of drugged driving this month.  For some ideas, you should definitely check out this Teen Drugged Driving Activity Guide from theantidrug.com website.

I hope you find some useful tips, and that your chapter empowers others to make safe decisions while driving.  Have a spectacular holiday season and enjoy your time with friends and family!
