It's Time to Update!
We ask all chapters to update their information each year so that we have the latest contact information for advisors. The chapter registration form has been simplified, so it will take just a minute to fill out, which you can do on paper or on the SADD website. If you don't have a 2010-2011 Chapter Recognition Certificate, you haven't updated this year! Click here to update now.

Greetings!
Welcome to another issue of The SADDvocate! Help SADD win big in the Best Buy @15 Exchange, and win prizes yourself! There are lots of other contests and opportunities for your chapter, too - read on! We're always trying to increase the number of subscribers for The SADDvocate, so that every SADD chapter knows the latest news. Please encourage your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and e-mail address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org. Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, in full color with graphics. You can view every issue in our online archive. This issue will be posted to the archive later today. A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page. Please "like" our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well! Links to our social network pages are on the bar at left. |
 | Best Buy @15 - Win $ and Support SADD!
| SADD is participating in Best Buy's @15 Exchange, which allows teens to determine Best Buy's donation to charities through online activities. SADD has a chance to win up to $250,000 by January 30, but we need your help to win!
Register on at15.com, earn points, and the most critical part - sometime between January 15-30, log in and donate your points to SADD! The percentage of donated points SADD receives is the percentage of the $250,000 SADD will receive, so please take just a few minutes and help us win big!
Even better, you can win money for yourself while helping SADD at the same time. We've already handed out hundreds of dollars in prizes, but there's still time for you to cash in!
Chapter Contest The advisors at the top three SADD chapters that register the most people on at15.com will win $100! Last month, Janet Pflum from Perry Meridian High School in Indiana, Brenda Joyner at Santa Fe High School in Florida, and Gerry Apple at Shelton High School in Washington state each won $100! Here's what to do if you want to join them.
- Gather students around an internet-connected computer for about 20 minutes at a SADD meeting or class, or set up a laptop in the cafeteria at lunch to reach lots of students.
- Get as many students as possible to register on at15.com.
- Collect their e-mail addresses on the sign-up sheet.
- Fax or scan and e-mail the sign-up sheet to SADD National by the contest deadline of January 14.
Remember, the top three chapters will win $100 each. Even better, just for entering - by sending the sign-up sheet - we'll send you a complete set of attitudes for living posters for free!
Student Contest Since students are the ones who earn points on the at15.com site, we're rewarding individuals in our student contest. The top three students with the most points earned will win $50! Here's what you do.
- Register on at15.com if you haven't already done so.
- Earn points - play games, answer trivia questions, nominate your school for awards. You get 150 points for referring each friend (and adult!) who signs up, so start a referral chain!
 - Then take a screen shot of your point total, and e-mail it to programs@sadd.org by the contest deadline of January 14.
Video Contest We also held a "Why SADD?" video PSA contest last month. We're happy to announce the winner of the contest (taking home a prize of $250) is Alexis Jenkins from Helix Charter High School SADD in La Mesa, California. You can check out Alexis' winning video by clicking here. Way to go, Alexis!
Thanks for your help, and good luck!

 | Contests, Grants, and Awards | You may be familiar with the "Natural High" series of DVDs sent to schools across the country each year, in which musicians, actors, athletes and more others share their "natural highs" which keep them drug-free.
Now it's your chance. Share YOUR natural high and be eligible to win a $250 scholarship. You can make a video, write an essay, create a poster, perform a song or poem, or give a speech - each category will offer a scholarship to both a high school and middle school student. The deadline to enter is March 31, so learn more today!
It's that time once again - the annual NOYS Act Out Loud contest as part of National Youth Traffic Safety Month in May. The contest challenges schools to create a distracted driving prevention program, and compete to win $10,000 through Internet voting!
Learn more at the actoutloud.org website, and register your project today for a chance at big money! The first 200 teams to register will receive a free distracted driving prevention toolkit.
Don't forget the Marin Institute's "Free the Bowl" video contest to encourage the NFL to remove alcohol advertising from the Super Bowl. Create a video and you could win $1,000! The deadline is January 24, 2011. To learn more, click here.
This month is also your last chance to enter the National Road Safety Foundation's "Drive 2 Life" PSA contest. Write a script with your idea for a distracted driving ad, and submit it by February 7, 2011. To learn more, click here.

 | Programs and Resources
| Applications for the 2011-2012 SADD National Student of the Year (SOY) and Student Leadership Council (SLC) are now available. Applicants must be a current junior or senior in high school. Being selected to serve on the SLC is a tremendous honor, and many SLC alumni call it one of the best and most important experiences of their lives.
States with SADD State Coordinators often have a process for nominating a single student from the state for SOY or the SLC. If you're in a state with a State Coordinator, please contact him/her directly to learn if such a process exists. Contact information for State Coordinators is available here.
If you're in a state without a State Coordinator, or one in which there is no process for nominating a single student, you may request an application by contacting Travis Helmondollar at thelmondollar@sadd.org. Travis is also available to answer any questions about the process.
Our friends at Above the Influence (ATI) are holding webinars this month to help train youth and community groups on the new ATI toolkit of activities. You'll also have a chance to ask questions and learn best practices from pilot testing of the toolkit. There will be two identical webinars offered - on Thursday, January 13 and Thursday, January 20, both at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time. To register, click here for January 13 or here for January 20. For more information, e-mail atiresources@fleishman.com.
Remember that January 17, 2011, is the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. You can find project ideas, tips and tools, and the opportunity to register your project at MLK.gov. Community service and service-learning are important parts of what SADD is all about, and we hope your chapter will find a way to help on January 17 - and even use this to kick off a "Semester of Service."
Also, a reminder that our friends at the Drug-Free Action Alliance are once again holding their "Big Bowl Vote," a simple quiz administered to middle and high school students the Monday morning after the Super Bowl. The quiz measures the impact of alcohol advertising. This can be a powerful tool to gather press coverage for your chapter and call attention to an important issue. For more information, click here.

 | SADD Store - The Countdown is On!
| We're ALMOST ready to unveil the new SADD Store! SLC members and staff are testing the new, cutting-edge online store right now, and we expect to launch by the middle of the month. SADD Student of the Year Jess Roscoe thinks the new store "rocks" and you'll love the selection of products. You can order customized t-shirts, provide product reviews, and more!
Our vendor for the new store is API (Advertising, Premiums, and Incentives) Source, a full-service company that has been providing quality products and store management for youth organizations for 45 years. We believe you'll receive great customer service and high-quality, affordable products from the new SADD Store.
Look for the launch real soon!

 | Chapter Toolbox | Each month, a member of SADD National's Student Leadership Council (SLC) will write a column designed to help chapters with useful activity ideas, meeting suggestions, and more.
Happy New Year, SADD students and advisors! I am Bianca Millien, and I am a member of the SLC from Grayson, Georgia. I'm a freshman at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, studying International Business and minoring in Spanish. I wish you high school seniors the best of luck in applying to college, and finding the perfect school for you!
Every new year brings a fresh start and resolutions to help address the challenges we face. It also brings a chance for your chapter to refocus and plan for the rest of the school year, so you can continue to make a difference!
SADD designates January as a month to focus on mentoring younger students. Younger students really look up to older students, and a visit from your chapter can be a compelling way to help these students hold on to positive attitudes and make healthy decisions.
To get involved with elementary school students, you'll first need to work with your advisor and get permission from the principals of each school. Then you can come up with ideas of what to do with the students. In the past, my high school SADD chapter had the elementary school students write cards to juniors and seniors asking them to stay safe on prom night. There are lots of other ideas on the SADD Elementary School Campaign page. If do something really cool or have other suggestions, please share them with us on our Facebook page.
Have a fantabulous 2011, everyone! Hope to see you at the national conference in Chicago!

 | Chapter Spotlight - John Marshall SADD
|
In the Spotlight this month is John Marshall Middle School SADD in Wichita, Kansas. John Marshall SADD students organized a holiday donation drive at the school, in which classes competed against each other to win a pizza party. Class teams received points for donating toys to the US Marine Corps and its Toys for Tots program or collecting nonperishable food items for the Kansas Food Bank. This program was conceived, organized, and run by SADD students (posing above with the food and toys donated during the drive). SADD Advisors Cris Moore and Shane Koranda report that 31 classes in the school competed and collected nearly 2,500 food items and 200 toys! Congratulations to John Marshall Middle School SADD for their commitment to community service and making the world a better place! If you'd like YOUR chapter to appear in the Spotlight, send news and a good group photo to Chris Egan at cegan@sadd.org. |
