It's Time to Update!

We ask all chapters to update their information each year so that we have the latest contact information for advisors.

The chapter registration form has been simplified, so it will take just a minute to fill out, which you can do on paper or on the SADD website.

Once you update, we'll send you a certificate suitable for framing and a free poster.  Please allow up to four weeks to receive your certificate - but get started right away - you don't need to wait to receive the certificate to run chapter activities.

If you don't have a 2010-2011 Chapter Recognition Certificate, you haven't updated this year!

Greetings!

Welcome to another issue of The SADDvocate!  This month, we have exciting news about a new opportunity for you to help SADD!  Thanks also to those of you who signed up for our new ParentTeen Matters e-newsletter.  This parent e-newsletter and website (parentteenmatters.org) will launch soon, so sign up today by clicking the "Update Profile" link at the bottom of this e-mail to add the ParentTeen Matters e-newsletter to your subscription to The SADDvocate.

We're always trying to increase the number of subscribers for The SADDvocate, so that every SADD chapter knows the latest news.  Please encourage your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and e-mail address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org

Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, with full colors and graphics.  You can view every issue in our online archive.  This issue will be posted to the archive later today.

A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page.  Please like our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well!  Links to all our social network pages are on the left bar.
Play for SADD and Help Us Win Big Money!
@15 logoWe have exciting news - SADD has been selected as one of four featured partners in Best Buy's @15 Exchange during the November - January time period!  The @15 Exchange empowers teens to be the drivers of change by giving them the opportunity to direct Best Buy's charitable donations through online activities and voting.  Teens themselves will divide up $250,000 among SADD and three other organizations by earning points and using them to vote for their favorite!

SADD National's Student Leadership Council (SLC) is heading up this effort - and their goal is to receive at least 50% of the points.  That would mean SADD National would receive $125,000 to support SADD programming and services to chapters.  With all of us working together, we can make this happen!

Here's what you need to do to help:
  1. Register as a member on the at15.com website - it's free, and you will receive 1,500 points just for signing up!  Only teens 13-18 years old can register.
  2. Earn more points by completing activities on at15.com - play games; participate in polls, surveys, and discussion forums; or nominate your school for a Teach @15 Award. @15 points logo
  3. Spread the word in your community!  Get creative about getting the message out about this awesome fund-raising opportunity for SADD.  You can earn points by getting your friends and classmates to play!
  4. Donate your points to SADD during the last two weeks of January.  The percentage of points donated to each organization determines how much of the $250,000 goes to SADD.  Help SADD win and continue to make a difference!
We hope you'll help us win a big share of this money.  If you're a teen between the ages of 13-18, please register today, and be sure to check in regularly at SADD National's Facebook page for updates and cool incentives!
SADD National Conference - Big News!
Chicago Postcard
We know you've been waiting on pins and needles, so we're excited to announce that the 2011 SADD National Conference will be held Sunday, June 26 - Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Chicago, Illinois!  Mark your calendars today and make your plans to join us next summer.

Registration and pricing details will be posted very soon on the sadd.org homepage.  We are making every effort to keep the conference ground package price affordable, but we do anticipate that prices will increase from previous years (the 2010 ground package price was $699 for students and $799 for adults, which includes conference registration, hotel, and meals).  As you plan fund-raising efforts, be sure to visit sadd.org frequently for tips and ideas.

We hope you're excited to hear this news, and we look forward to seeing you in Chicago next June!

Don't forget the first Drug Facts Week from November 8-14.  Sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the former Drug Facts Day has been expanded into an entire week, and there are extensive planning materials to help your chapter host an event - click here to learn more!

Mix it Up logoOne other upcoming event is Mix It Up at Lunch Day.  On this day (scheduled for November 9 this year), students are "mixed up" by sitting with other students at lunch whom they might not usually interact with.  The idea is to break down social boundaries and cliques and improve the school climate and reduce bullying.  We encourage all SADD chapters to bring Mix It Up at Lunch Day to your school.  Click here to learn more - and make sure to register your school on the map!

Chapter Toolbox

Each month, a member of SADD National's Student Leadership Council (SLC) will write a column designed to help chapters with useful activity ideas, meeting suggestions, and more.

Zach Jones headshotWhat's up, SADD students and advisors?  I'm Zach Jones, SADD National SLC Executive Committee member.  Currently, I attend Whitko High School in South Whitley, Indiana, and I plan to attend Indiana University to pursue a degree in physics next fall.

A time for delicious food and fall colors, November is also SADD's "Wipe Out Smoking Month," dedicated to the eradication of smoking among teens.  While smoking among teens (and adults) has dropped significantly over the years, it remains a serious problem.  To all SADD students and advisors, I say it is up to us.  It is up to us to help, heal, and bring the smoking pandemic among young people to a swift and definite end.

smokeout logoThe American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout, held this year on November 18, provides a perfect time for your chapter to focus on anti-smoking/tobacco activities.  There are downloadable posters, table tents, and other materials at the ACS website.  Besides putting up posters, making school announcements, and trying to gain media attention, your chapter can take an individual approach.  I often try to provide support to smokers, offering gum and a few words of affirmation as they struggle to quit.  A little time on your part can mean a world of difference to smokers.  So what do you say - let's work together to end teen smoking!

If your chapter is interested in making a difference this month and needs help, post a question on the SADD National Facebook page or see the Wipe Out Smoking Month page for more resources.  Good luck with all your smoking prevention activities!

Chapter Spotlight - Riverview SADD
Riverview SADD
In the Spotlight this month is Riverview High School SADD from Sarasota, Florida.

Riverview SADD decided to focus on driving safety for their annual Homecoming and dance.  One SADD student entered a national video contest last school year, and won a prize pack including t-shirts and other items.  Riverview SADD decided to use these items as part of their campaign.

SADD President Angel Kleer reports that they created a safe driving pledge and gave t-shirts and SADD keychains to students who signed.  They highlighted the campaign with a 30-minute broadcast on the school video news program, and got a great response, posting the signed pledges in the windows of their school cafeteria.

Angel (pictured above with other SADD officers and SADD Advisor/School Resource Officer Hayden Gallof) reports that the campaign went extremely well, and they hope it helps inspire students at Riverview High School to drive safely.  Congratulations to Riverview SADD for their passion and commitment to safety!

If you'd like to see YOUR chapter in the Spotlight, send news and pictures to Chris Egan at cegan@sadd.org.
SADD Speaker Series
http://www.sadd.org/speaker.htmWith 30 years of experience in the youth health and safety arena, Stephen Wallace, SADD Chairman and featured presenter of our celebrated Speaker Series, shares a wealth of knowledge and practical advice in both parent/teen and parent forums.  He is passionate about empowering teens and parents to communicate openly about the critical issues and choices young people face and celebrate the positive steps they take on the way to becoming happy, healthy, and productive adults.

Stephen was recently honored with Susquehanna University's Distinguished Alumni Leadership Award.  Click here to read more about this tremendous honor.

reality gap coverConsider hosting Stephen for the Family Focus program - our most popular presentation and a perfect way to introduce a season of safe celebrations for your school and community.  His book, Reality Gap: Alcohol, Drugs, and Sex--What Parents Don't Know and Teens Aren't Telling, makes a great holiday gift.  Selling books at your event is an effective fund-raiser, and Stephen will personally autograph each copy sold.

For more information, click here or call Nicole Cheschi at SADD National at 877-SADD-INC (723-3462), ext. 222.  When you book your event, you'll receive a complimentary copy of Reality Gap for your school's media/resource center.

SADD Store - Every Day is a Sale Day!
Our brand-new SADD Store is still in development, and we hope to launch it by the end of the year.  In the meantime, every day is a sale day as we try to clear out old inventory - you can find plenty of great products at 30-50% off the original price!

SADD backpackYou'll find sweatshirts and hoodies for chapters stuck in the cold for the next five months, and plenty of t-shirts, shorts, and SADD flip-flops for those chapters in the sun.  We also have cute, affordable items priced at a dollar - attitudes for living and "Friends for Life" bracelets and emPOWERed wristbands - that are perfect for holiday gifts or as chapter giveaways.  You'll find rock-bottom prices on the SADD Sportspack (pictured), baseball caps, and more.  And every purchase helps SADD National support our chapters - now that's a win-win!
