Greetings!
Welcome to the last issue of The SADDvocate for this school year! Is your chapter planning any summer activities? We're always trying to increase the number of subscribers to The SADDvocate to ensure that every SADD chapter knows the latest news. Please encourage your SADD students to sign up on sadd.org or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and e-mail address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org. Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, with full colors and graphics. You can view every issue in our online archive. This issue will be posted to the archive later today. We're still trying to get to 5,000 "likes" on our Facebook page. Please like our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well! Links to all our social network pages are on the left bar. |

SADD Speaker Series Grant Program
| Liberty Mutual has been SADD's National Insurance Partner for many years. Together, we believe that effective parent-teen communication is critical to helping teens engage in safe behavior. We're teaming up on a special grant program to bring the SADD Speaker Series to a limited number of schools and communities during the months of September through December 2010.
Through this generous grant program from Liberty Mutual, you can bring Stephen Wallace, SADD Chairman and nationally recognized youth advocate, to your school/community for just $200! If your chapter is in one of these states, you are eligible to apply: AL, CT, GA, KY, MA, MD, NH, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, or TX.
Only 20 schools will be chosen from the applications received, and the deadline is June 30! So don't wait; click here for more information and apply today for your chance at a great speaker at an incredible price! |

SADD Legislative News | At last year's SADD National Conference in Washington, D.C., SADD introduced a new focus on national advocacy. A special group of students was chosen for SADD SPEAKs (Students for Policy, Education, Advocacy, and Knowledge), and they helped educate conference attendees on SADD's legislative priorities and helped prepare them for meetings with their elected senators and representatives.
Since that time, we've been working hard in Washington, D.C., on a variety of issues related to SADD. Perhaps the biggest is pushing for Congress to devote more time, attention, and resources to teen peer-to-peer education, particularly as it relates to teen traffic safety. While legislators push for new laws and police to enforce them, teens themselves haven't been an important part of the effort.
That's starting to change, however. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota has agreed to introduce (and Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota has agreed to co-sponsor) the Students Taking Action for Road Safety (STARS) Act, which would give each state funding specifically for teen peer-to-peer programs like SADD. Senator Klobuchar announced her support at a special Teen Driving Summit hosted by Tartan High School SADD in Oakdale, Minnesota, joined by SADD and other national leaders. Pictured above from left to right: SADD National President Penny Wells, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) head David
Strickland, Tartan High SADD President Tashie Xiong (who spoke at the event), Senator Klobuchar, incoming SADD National Student of the Year Jessica Roscoe from North Dakota, and Paige Meyer, a Minnesota representative on the Northern Lights SADD Regional Advisory Board.
In the months ahead, we'll be asking for your help as we try to get other senators to co-sponsor the bill (Representative Michael Capuano of Massachusetts plans to introduce the STARS Act in the House, and we'll be looking for co-sponsors there as well). Stay tuned for more information. We extend our thanks to Senator Klobuchar for her leadership on teen safety issues!

Chapter Spotlight - Casa Grande SADD
| In the Spotlight this month is Casa Grande Union High School SADD from Casa Grande, Arizona.
Casa Grande SADD has been partnering with the Casa Grande Alliance, a community anti-drug coalition. As part of the partnership, Casa Grande SADD made nine elementary school visits this year.
During the visits, the SADD students (pictured above at last fall's Arizona SADD state conference) meet with fourth- and fifth-graders to talk about drugs and alcohol. They put on skits designed to inform the younger students while entertaining them at the same time. SADD Advisor Brenda Boenzi-Reed reports that these visits are highly popular and successful!
Working with younger students is something that many SADD chapters do, and it can be a fun and effective way to reach them because elementary school-age youth tend to look up to older students. The reverse works, too, as many SADD chapters encourage younger students to write letters to high schoolers asking them to be safe at prom time.
Your chapter can do a skit, a lesson, or a fun activity, in partnership with an outside group like a community coalition or on your own. For example, some SADD chapters presented the federal government's "Reach Out Now" alcohol curriculum to younger students this past year. Congrats to Casa Grande SADD for their successful outreach to younger students!
If you'd like to see YOUR chapter in the Spotlight, be sure to let us know what you're doing! Send news and pictures to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org or the mailing address at the bottom of this newsletter.
