Greetings!

Welcome to The SADDvocate!  This month, we have a few items about teen dating violence prevention, as well as some last-chance contest information.

Please encourage all students in your chapter to sign up for The SADDvocate - just have them visit the sadd.org homepage to join!  If it's easier, you can send a list of names and e-mail addresses for your chapter to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org

Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate with graphics and colors or from reading it at all.  Remember that you can read all issues of The SADDvocate at any time by visiting our online archive.  This issue will be posted to the archive later today.

We also want all advisors and students to join our social networks - click the links on the left!
Programs and Resources
TDAVM logo SADD chapters across the country have been supporting National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week the first week of every February since 2006.  This year, Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID), a longtime supporter of this issue, sponsored legislation (which passed) to designate the entire month of February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM).

The National Resource Center for Teen Dating Violence and Awareness Month was created to coordinate efforts.  You can find this resource center at teendvmonth.org, and we encourage you to check it out!  It's full of fact sheets, templates, program curriculum and activity ideas, and links to additional resources.  What is your chapter doing for TDVAM?  Visit the resource center for an idea today!

Check out our Contests section below for information about an opportunity to address teen dating violence and to possibly win a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the NFL players gala!

NASN logoThe National Association of School Nurses partnered with PBS to create some programming around the issue of teen prescription drug abuse.  Called "Smart Moves, Smart Choices," the program consists of a five-part video and a planning kit containing information about how to host a school assembly on the issue and other materials.  Click here to learn more.

SADD logo tinyNeed the SADD logo?  It's available in high-resolution versions in a variety of formats on the sadd.org website.  Chapters are free to use the logo in compliance with the Graphic Standards Manual, including in print and on t-shirts, websites, etc.  Click here to download the logo!

DFAA logoIf you hurry, there's still time to implement the Drug-Free Action Alliance's Super Bowl Survey.  This simple three-question survey is designed for you to administer next Monday morning after the Super Bowl to measure the impact of alcohol advertising.  This survey can be a good way for your SADD chapter to gain exposure and call attention to alcohol advertising.  To download the kit, click here.
Contests, Awards, and Grants
That's Not Cool logoAt last summer's SADD National Conference, our friends at the Ad Council held a workshop on their "That's Not Cool" campaign, which focuses on teen dating violence through harassing texts, instant messages, Facebook posts, and e-mails.  Students in the workshop had the chance to create their own "Callout Card" to respond to someone who crossed their "digital line."

Now it's your turn to address this important issue during Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month - and you can win some cool prizes!  After all, your mobile, IM, and online accounts are each a part of YOU.  When someone you're dating is controlling, disrespecting, or pressuring you in those spaces, that's not cool.  This is your chance to create your own Callout Card.  The contest runs through March 15, and the grand prize is a trip to Washington, D.C., to meet NFL players at their annual gala.  Other prizes include autographed NFL memorabilia, t-shirts, and more.  Visit thatsnotcool.com/contest to learn more and submit your entry!

Act Out Loud logoDo you want $200 for your chapter to implement a distracted driving traffic safety program?  Until March 1, as part of the NOYS Act Out Loud contest your chapter can submit a project proposal to spread the word about the dangers of distracted driving, and the first 200 teams to submit a plan get $200!  Need an idea for a project?  Check out the NOYS National Youth Traffic Safety Month tool kit.

Twenty teams will be selected as finalists, and they'll receive $1,000 and a video camera to document their progress.  Then in May they'll post a final video, and Internet voting will choose the winner, who'll receive a cool $10,000!  Hurry -- you need to apply by the end of the month.  Visit actoutloud.org to learn more.

Belt it Out logoFord's Driving Skills for Life program is partnering with singer ("99 Times") and actress (One Tree Hill) Kate Voegele for a safe driving song contest.  Write and record a song on the topic of safe driving, and submit it by March 1.  Ford will pick the top 10 songs from those submitted, Internet voting will determine five finalists, and Kate Voegele will pick the winner.  The winning song will earn its creator(s) $5,000 each (up to five band members for a total of $25,000).  Feeling musical?  Click here to learn more.

FTB10 logoCongrats to Justin McBride, a former SADD National Student Leadership Council member who now volunteers with Arizona SADD.  Justin submitted the winning video in the Marin Institute's Free the Bowl contest!

This video contest challenged young people to come up with a commercial pushing the Super Bowl to eliminate alcohol advertising, using the latest facts and statistics about the effect of this advertising on youth.  For winning, Justin will receive a MacBook computer.  To check out Justin's winning video, click here
Chapter Spotlight: Avon Park SADD
Avon Park SADD

In the Spotlight this month is Avon Park High School SADD from Avon Park, Florida.

Avon Park SADD is one of a number of SADD chapters in Highlands County and beyond participating in a social norming campaign organized by the Heartlands Educational Consortium.  Social norming is a prevention effort that seeks to educate students about the actual numbers and percentages of alcohol and other drug use, because students frequently overestimate the number of their peers engaging in this behavior and therefore feel more pressure to use alcohol and drugs.  Social norming has been proven to be an effective way to reduce alcohol use among students.

Heartlands Educational Consortium Program Coordinator John Varady reports that Avon Park SADD students (pictured above with advisor Melodie Davis) worked very hard to spread the word about this campaign.  They used video PSAs and other tools to educate their classmates about the actual level of alcohol use, sharing the latest county statistics from the Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey.  Beyond that, they reached out to the community at large, educating adults with the same passion by attending a community fair and helping adults understand why they shouldn't provide alcohol to youth.  Congrats to Avon Park SADD and all the SADD chapters in central Florida working on this important project!

If you'd like to see YOUR chapter featured in the Spotlight, be sure to let us know what you're doing!  Send news and pictures to Chris Egan, SADD National Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org or the mailing address at the bottom of this newsletter.

Give a Day, Get a Disney Day
You may have seen that Disney is offering free admission to its parks for a day for people who complete a volunteer opportunity.  If you're coming to conference and considering this opportunity, be sure to read the offer's fine print, because there are a number of restrictions.  Most opportunities are for adults, and if you're under 18 you'll need to bring a parent/guardian to volunteer at those venues that will accept youth.  But if this is something you wish to explore if you're arriving early or staying later after the conference, visit the Disney website for more information.

Exhibit Hall
At the SADD National Conference, the Exhibit Hall is a terrific resource for your chapter.  We anticipate exhibitors from a broad array of nonprofits and corporations who will offer valuable information about programs, contests, funding opportunities, and more!  Don't miss this important feature of the conference.  Know an organization or company that might be interested in exhibiting?  Download the Exhibitor Prospectus.

Please spread the word about this newsletter!  You can sign up
on the sadd.org website to receive it, and we'd like as many students and advisors as possible to sign up.  The SADDvocate will be published every month during the school year, with no issues in July or August.

If you'd like to forward the newsletter to others, please DON'T forward it within your e-mail program, which distorts the formatting, links, and graphics.  Instead, use the "Forward This Issue to a Friend" link at the top or bottom left of this newsletter.
If it's easier, you can simply encourage them to read it online.  A link to the archive of past issues of The SADDvocate is available here.

The SADDvocate is designed to be visually appealing and colorful, with graphics and photos throughout.  Make sure you are enabling images in your e-mail program to see it properly.  If you receive only a text version of the newsletter, ask your IT person at school how you can receive HTML messages to get the full benefit of this newsletter.

Thanks again for all you do for SADD!

Sincerely,

Christopher Egan, Director of Field Services
