Greetings!
Welcome to The SADDvocate - and a new year and new decade! We've got some activity ideas and resources in this newsletter to help your chapter get off to a great start in the new year. Please encourage all students in your chapter to sign up for The SADDvocate - just have
them visit the sadd.org
homepage to join! If it's easier, you can send a list of names and
e-mail addresses for your chapter to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of
Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org. Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate with graphics and colors or from reading it at all. Remember that you can read all issues of The SADDvocate at any time by visiting our online archive. This issue will be posted to the archive later today. We also want all advisors and students to join our social networks - click the

Is your SADD chapter looking for new activity ideas? FACE's new T AKE it BACK Activities for Change: Idea Book for Youth is full of activity ideas to help your chapter communicate about alcohol issues in your school and community. Each activity is rated from simple to difficult, so you can choose activities appropriate for the readiness of your chapter. The manual has detailed instructions to guide you through the process of educating your school and community. This book is a tremendous resource for any SADD chapter interested in working on alcohol issues. To learn more, click here. The Drug-Free Action Alliance, the creator of such programs as "Parents Who Host Lose the Most," is holding their annual Super Bowl Survey. This simple three-question survey is designed for you to administer the Monday morning after the Super Bowl to measure the impact of alcohol advertising. Their Super Bowl Survey kit also includes ideas for messaging, follow-up activities, media literacy training, press release templates, and more. This survey can be a good way for your SADD chapter to gain exposure and call attention to alcohol advertising. To download the kit, click here. The Corporation for National and Community Service has created the King Day of Service in the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is held each year on his holiday commemorating his birthday. The 2010 King Day of Service is January 18. With a motto of "Make It a Day On, Not a Day Off," groups across the country - including SADD chapters - are planning community-service projects. Interested in doing something? Visit mlkday.gov for project ideas, school service-learning guides, and more. Did you know that you should never use periods within "SADD"? There are lots of other useful tips in SADD's Graphic Standards Manual, which you can download here. Remember that the SADD logo is available in high-resolution versions in a variety of formats on the sadd.org website. Chapters are free to use the logo in compliance with the Graphic Standards Manual, including in print and on t-shirts, websites, etc. Click here to download the logo! |

Contests, Awards, and Grants
|
SADD is a proud member of the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) coalition. NOYS has an opportunity, which expires Friday, to raise $25,000 and needs your help! For every person who pledges not to text and drive, $1 will be donated to NOYS. More than 15,000 have already pledged, but NOYS can earn another $10,000 by getting up to 25,000 pledges.
To pledge, you'll need to have a Facebook account with the Causes application installed and then click here. Scroll down and join the cause (by doing so, you're pledging not to text and drive). That's it - just a few clicks helps NOYS in a significant way. Please take just a second to do this today - remember, Friday is your last chance to join the cause!
Here are a few reminders about some upcoming contests. Until March 1, your chapter can submit a project proposal to spread the word about the dangers of distracted driving as part of the NOYS Act Out Loud contest. Need an idea for a project? Check out the NOYS National Youth Traffic Safety Month tool kit.
Twenty teams will be selected as finalists, and they'll receive $1,000 and a video camera to document their progress. Then in May they'll post a final video, and Internet voting will choose the winner - who'll receive a cool $10,000!
The first 200 teams to submit proposals will receive $200 for their project - that's free money, so don't wait - submit your proposal today! Visit actoutloud.org to learn more.
The Marin Institute is once again holding their "Free the Bowl" video contest to encourage the NFL to remove alcohol ads from the Super Bowl and call attention to the issue of alcohol advertising in general. To enter, create a 30- or 60-second video using at least one of the facts from contest fact sheets. You could win a Macbook computer if your video is chosen as the winner! Visit freethebowl.com for more information. Hurry - the deadline is January 26!

Chapter Spotlight: GFW SADD
|
In the Spotlight this month is Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop Middle School SADD from Fairfax, Minnesota.
GFW SADD took on an advocacy project in their community, urging their city council to make a new skateboard park tobacco-free. SADD students (pictured above), working with Tobacco Free Youth of Sibley County, appeared before the Winthrop City Council to argue for the smoke-free designation for the skate park. Carefully and thoroughly making their point, they cited statistics about youth taking up smoking after being exposed to tobacco use. They also spoke about the proven harmful effects of second-hand smoke. Thanks to the SADD students' reasoned arguments, the city councilors agreed to designate the skate park as a tobacco-free zone. SADD advisor Tammie Knick reports that the students then took a pledge to remain tobacco-free themselves. Congratulations to GFW SADD for their determination to change their community and their hard work in doing so! If you'd like to see YOUR chapter featured in the Spotlight, be sure to let us know what you're doing! Send news and pictures to Chris Egan, SADD National Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org or the mailing address at the bottom of this newsletter. |

Looking for a Dynamic Speaker?
|
Look no further. As a school psychologist, adolescent counselor, researcher, camp director, college professor, and SADD Chairman and CEO, Stephen Wallace has gained broad experience with teens and unique insights into teen development, attitudes, and behaviors. The SADD Speaker Series is designed to share what he has learned! It is also intended to be a resource that empowers teens and parents to communicate openly about the critical issues young people face, collaborate on the choices they make, and celebrate the positive steps they take on the way to becoming happy, healthy, and productive men and women.
Here's a sample of what people are saying. According to Dr. Richard Enemark, headmaster at Doane Stuart School in New York, "Stephen Wallace speaks to adults and students with the same immediacy and passion. His solid facts back up his assertions. His caring dedication to young people wins over his audience and holds people in rapt attention."
If you're looking for a spring break or pre-prom program that will resonate with students, parents, and faculty, bring the Speaker Series to your school! For information about fees and booking availability, contact Jessica Rice, SADD Program Specialist, toll-free at 877-SADD-INC (723-3462), ext. 227, or e-mail jrice@sadd.org. Book any two programs together and receive a $250 discount on the second presentation. You can even use Stephen's book, Reality Gap, as a fund-raiser to defray speaking fees.

Don't forget that the SADD National Field Services
Department is here to provide help and support to chapters, especially those in
states without State Coordinators. Just call 1-877-SADD-INC or e-mail cegan@sadd.org for service.
Please spread the word about
this newsletter! You can sign up on the sadd.org website to receive it, and we'd like as many students and
advisors as possible to sign up. The SADDvocate will be
published every month during the school year, with no issues in July or August.
If you'd like to forward the newsletter
to others, please DON'T forward it within your e-mail program, which distorts
the formatting, links, and graphics. Instead, use the "Forward This Issue to a Friend" link at
the top or bottom left of this newsletter. If it's easier, you can simply encourage them to read it online. A link to the archive of past issues of The SADDvocate is available here. The SADDvocate is designed to be visually appealing and colorful, with graphics and photos throughout. Make sure you are enabling images in your e-mail program to see it properly. If you receive only a text version of the newsletter, ask your IT person at school how you can receive HTML messages to get the full benefit of this newsletter.
Thanks again
for all you do for SADD!
Sincerely,

Christopher Egan, Director of Field Services |
