Greetings!

ricky photoWelcome to The SADDvocate!  I'm Ricky Birt, and I have the honor of serving you as the 2009-2010 SADD National Student of the Year.  I'm from New Carlisle, Ohio, and am a freshman studying political science at Wittenberg University.

SADD has been an important part of my life for many reasons.  I believe in the power and message of SADD.  Each one of you reading this is dedicated to spreading the message to your friends and communities that one person standing up for what is right can make a difference.  When SADD students work together, we change the tide, we change schools and, most of all, we change lives.

Your national Student Leadership Council (SLC) is already hard at work planning the 2010 SADD National Conference.  See the article below for more details.

As a new school year begins, I want to wish each of you a very successful start.  SADD chapters across the country are already implementing new and exciting campaigns to educate their students about a variety of destructive decisions.  Please remember that the SADD National staff, the SLC, and I are always here if you need us.  The SADD website is also loaded with valuable resources that will help your chapter, so check it out.  While you are there, don't forget to register your chapter or update your information for the new year!

I also want to remind you to encourage all students in your chapter to sign up for The SADDvocate - just have them visit the sadd.org homepage to join!  If it's easier, you can send a list of names and e-mail addresses for your chapter to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org

Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate with graphics and colors or from reading it at all.  Remember that you can read all issues of The SADDvocate at any time by visiting our online archive.  This issue will be posted to the archive later today.

We also want all advisors and students to join our social networks - click the links on the left!

I wish you all a great year ahead!

NIDA Chat Day logoAre you a high school student?  Do you have questions about drugs?  Want to get honest answers without being lectured?  Then join the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for the third annual Drug Facts Chat Day!

On November 10, top scientists from NIDA will go live online to answer your questions about drugs and their impact on your brain and body.  Gain the knowledge required to make smart, healthy decisions!

SADD Advisors: Only registered schools can ask questions, and space is limited.  To ensure your high school is among the 50 schools chosen to participate, please pre-register today by submitting the school name, address, and website, and the name, phone number, and e-mail address of a designated contact person to information@nida.nih.gov.  Then check the NIDA website soon for official registration information.

NOYS UYI logoNOYS has introduced a new parent program called "Under Your Influence," which aims to equip parents with tools and strategies to encourage their teens to drive safely.  The underyourinfluence.org site contains videos, an eye-opening quiz, tips and tools, and more.  Check it out today!

Family Day logoMore than a decade of research by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University has consistently found that the more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink, or use drugs.  To help push this practice, CASA created Family Day, which will be held on Monday, September 28th.  On Family Day, families are encouraged to eat dinner together.  Start your planning now - free materials are available.  To learn more, visit casafamilyday.org

Parents: The Anti-Drug logoThe Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) is offering free unlimited copies of selected brochures as a back-to-school special.  These handouts, designed for parents, can be ordered online at theantidrug.com/resources. Also, check out the newly redesigned methresources.gov site.
SADD Speaker Series
http://www.sadd.org/speaker.htmIt's the start of a new school year and a great time to think about improving the relationship between teens and their parents and encouraging positive decision-making among teens.  Bring SADD's Family Focus presentation to your school or community this fall!

Wallace headshotDuring Family Focus, SADD Chairman and CEO Stephen Wallace, author of the compelling book Reality Gap: Alcohol, Drugs, and Sex--What Parents Don't Know and Teens Aren't Telling, speaks to teenagers and their parents about the "reality gap" that often divides them and how they can improve family communication.

Through the SADD Speaker Series, we also offer daytime assemblies for middle and high school students, parent presentations, college programs, and interactive seminars for school administrators, faculty, and staff.  The dynamic, thought-provoking presentations can be tailored to meet the needs of your school or community.

Don't miss out!  For more information or to book a SADD Speaker Series presentation, contact Stacey Hart at 877-SADD-INC (723-3462) or shart@sadd.org.
Chapter Spotlight: Northgate SADD
Northgate SADD
In the Spotlight this month is Northgate High School SADD from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Northgate SADD recently hosted a media event to call attention to the high-visibility law enforcement crackdown on impaired driving, which ran from August 21 to September 7.  Called "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit.  Under Arrest." the event included police sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols to reduce impaired driving during the high-risk late summer/Labor Day weekend time period.

SADD offers a campaign called "SADD and the Law: SADD Mobilizes" which is designed to connect youth and law enforcement during high-visibility events such as this impaired driving crackdown.  Your chapter can gain invaluable media exposure and build relationships with local law enforcement, and police find it's easier to get media attention when they work with SADD chapters at checkpoints.  To download the free SADD Mobilizes campaign, click here.

Northgate SADD also used the event to help promote the new Pennsylvania DUI Association/Pennsylvania SADD underage drinking prevention program called "U-Turn."  The program attempts to encourage students to think differently about underage drinking by using fun events, statistics, contests, and more.  Check out the U-Turn website at pullayouee.com.

The event was a huge success, and it garnered significant press attention, including in both major Pittsburgh newspapers.  Pictured above are Northgate SADD members and law enforcement, as well as Pennsylvania SADD State Coordinator Felicity DeBacco-Erni (at right) during the event.  Congratulations to Northgate SADD for gaining such terrific visibility!

If you'd like to see YOUR chapter featured in the Spotlight, be sure to let us know what you're doing!  Send news and pictures to Chris Egan, SADD National Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org or the mailing address at the bottom of this newsletter.

Don't forget that the SADD National Field Services Department is here to provide help and support to chapters, especially those in states without State Coordinators.  Just call 1-877-SADD-INC or e-mail cegan@sadd.org for service.

Please spread the word about this newsletter!  You can sign up
on the sadd.org website to receive it, and we'd like as many students and advisors as possible to sign up.  The SADDvocate will be published every month during the school year, with no issues in July or August.

If you'd like to forward the newsletter to others, please DON'T forward it within your e-mail program, which distorts the formatting, links, and graphics.  Instead, use the "Forward This Issue to a Friend" link at the top or bottom left of this newsletter.
If it's easier, you can simply encourage them to read it online.  A link to the archive of past issues of The SADDvocate is available here.

The SADDvocate is designed to be visually appealing and colorful, with graphics and photos throughout.  Make sure you are enabling images in your e-mail program to see it properly.  If you receive only a text version of the newsletter, ask your IT person at school how you can receive HTML messages to get the full benefit of this newsletter.

Thanks again for all you do for SADD!

Sincerely,

Christopher Egan, Director of Field Services
