Apply Today for SADD SPEAKs!
|
SADD SPEAKs (Students for Policy, Education, Advocacy, and Knowledge) is a special two-day advocacy training program to be held in advance of the SADD National Conference in Washington, D.C., this July.
Students selected to participate in this program will begin work in February with SADD's lobbyist, helping to draft legislative language and beginning to strategize about efforts to push our legislative agenda. They will attend the two-day SPEAKs training and play a key role during the national conference preparing conference participants to advocate for SADD on Capitol Hill. SPEAKs students will return home with skills they can put to work advocating for SADD on the state and local levels.
Participants in the 2005 SADD SPEAKs program reported that they made lifelong friends, developed important skills, and had a huge amount of fun as part of SPEAKs. A number of these students went on to key leadership roles in SADD - from state Student Advisory Boards and state Student of the Year to the SADD National Student Leadership Council and even SADD National Student of the Year! Participating in SADD SPEAKs could put you in line for these great opportunities.
We're now accepting applications for SADD SPEAKs from students currently in their sophomore, junior, or senior year in high school. Applications are due January 21, so hurry - apply for this unforgettable experience today! Click here for more information.

National Youth Traffic Safety Month
|
Congratulations to Anoka High School SADD in Anoka, Minnesota! They recently won second place in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rural youth traffic safety messaging contest. Anoka SADD created a project called "Teen Driver 411" that used a website, videos, giveaways, and presentations to promote awareness of Minnesota laws applying to teen drivers. Visit their teendriver411.com website to check out their efforts, which will be highlighted in National Youth Traffic Safety Month (NYTSM), held each May. For finishing second, Anoka SADD received $2,000 and a trip to Washington to receive their award. Pictured above are Anoka SADD co-presidents Ashley Curley and Natalie Hayford receiving the award from Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters. Anoka SADD has won a number of awards with sizable cash prizes in recent years - providing a great example of how SADD chapters can gain recognition and funding by participating in the many opportunities we highlight each month in The SADDvocate. One such opportunity is also part of NYTSM. Act Out Loud returns in expanded form for 2009! This competition challenges SADD chapters and others to develop teen traffic safety activism projects to save lives! Here's how it works: apply by February 17 with a project idea. Twenty schools will be chosen by February 27 as finalists and will receive $1,000 each to implement their project and a Flip video camera to document their efforts. Starting March 9, they will document their project in blog and video entries, posting a final report on May 8. Then, from May 11-22, the public is invited to vote online for their favorite project. Internet voting will determine the winner, who will receive $10,000! The second- and third-place winners also receive cash prizes of $5,000 and $3,000, respectively. Last year Notre Dame Prep SADD in Scottsdale, Arizona, won second place, and two other SADD chapters were among the finalists. We're hoping for even more SADD participation this year! Visit actoutloud.org to learn more and fill out the application. Remember that the deadline to apply is February 17, so start thinking about your project today! One last NYTSM item: free NYTSM materials are now available from the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS), which puts on NYTSM. These materials include an 18-month NYTSM calendar, a poster with lesson plans and reproducible handouts, and a NYTSM tool kit CD. To request your free copy of these materials, email info@noys.org with your name, school/SADD chapter name, and mailing address. |

Fund-Raisers and Contests
|
SADD National announces a new partnership with Enjoy the City Promotions to bring a new fund-raising program to SADD chapters, called The Ultimate Fundraiser. All SADD chapters may participate in this no-cost, risk-free fund-raiser. The concept is simple: SADD students sell valuable coupon books loaded with up to 600 coupons worth nearly $4,000. There is no cost for this fund-raiser, as the books are provided to you on consignment. There's no risk, either, as you simply return unsold books after your selling period. The books sell for $25 - a great value, since redeeming just a few coupons from the book more than pays for the cost. The coupons are from a variety of family-friendly stores and restaurants, such as McDonald's, Domino's, Pizza Hut, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Dick's Sporting Goods, and many more. With this fund-raiser, your chapter could raise hundreds of dollars (or more!) in just a few weeks. Of the $25 price per book, your chapter keeps $12.50 - and there are great prizes, too! To learn more, click here and get started raising funds today! Our friends at the Marin Institute are having a video contest to help free the Super Bowl from beer ads! Did you know that beer is the most advertised product during the Super Bowl? Thirty million underage youth will see beer commercials during the game. The Marin Institute challenges you to come up with a 30- or 60- second commercial with facts about alcohol advertising. There are great prizes, including a MacBook laptop with video editing software as the grand prize! To learn more, visit freethebowl.com. Hurry - the deadline is January 25th! |

Dates are still available this spring to book a SADD Speaker Series event. Don't hesitate and miss your chance to bring SADD Chairman and CEO Stephen Wallace, author of the compelling new book Reality Gap: Alcohol, Drugs, and Sex--What Parents Don't Know and Teens Aren't Telling, to your school or community! When speaking to teens, parents, educators, or other adults who influence young people, Stephen shares SADD's groundbreaking, original research about the real world of today's teenagers to empower students, improve family communication, and explore the role adults have in helping keep teens safe. For more information about the six presentations available in the SADD Speaker Series and to book an event, contact Stacey Hart at 1-877-SADD-INC or shart@sadd.org. A reminder that the SADD logo is now freely available on the SADD website for registered chapters to download and use on posters, websites, yearbooks, t-shirts, and other items. You no longer need to obtain advance permission to use the logo! Click here to download the SADD logo, and make sure to check out SADD's Graphic Standards Manual, which explains the rules for using the logo properly. Our friends at Do Something are once again holding their Teens for Jeans drive to provide jeans to homeless teens. From January 26 through February 22, bring your gently worn jeans to any Aeropostale store. They'll be given to a homeless teen, and you'll receive 25% off a new pair of jeans! Do Something is hoping to collect 250,000 pairs of jeans. For more information, visit teensforjeans.com. |

Chapter Spotlight: Henderson SADD
|
In the Spotlight this month is Kenneth Henderson Middle School SADD from Garden City, Kansas.
KH SADD recently participated in a "Holiday Lights" parade in their hometown. Their float was a culmination of their holiday activities, which were designed to promote positive and healthy decision-making over the holiday season. SADD advisor Renee Scott reports that 40 of the 70 students in the SADD chapter participated in the parade. Participating in parades with a float can be an effective and highly visible way to promote your SADD chapter in your community. You might consider passing out giveaways or information along the route to spread the SADD message. Congratulations to Kenneth Henderson Middle School SADD for their efforts to promote SADD! If you'd like to see YOUR chapter featured in the Spotlight, be sure to let us know what you're doing! Send news to Chris Egan, SADD National Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org or the mailing address at the bottom of this newsletter. |

Chapter Toolbox
|
Each month, a member of the SADD National Student Leadership Council (SLC) will write a column designed to help SADD chapters - activity ideas, meeting tips, and other useful topics. This month's article is from SLC member Bridget Rekow of Ellendale, North Dakota.
Do you want to make a lasting impact in your community? Would you like to help the next generation of students avoid some of the pressures you face in high school? Of course you would - that's why you're part of SADD! Your SADD chapter is already making a difference in your school; however, there's a way in which your chapter can make an even greater, lasting change in your community - by reaching out to younger students.
Many SADD chapters work to reach their peers in high school, but the high-risk behaviors we address in high schools are very evident in many middle schools and even some elementary schools today. Making positive choices is a lifestyle that is easier to implement when it is learned and internalized at a young age. Your SADD chapter can lead a change in your entire community by reaching out to those who are looking up to you.
Encourage your SADD chapter to get involved with elementary and middle schools in your area. By being good role models and interacting with younger students, you will get them excited about joining SADD and provide a foundation for making healthy lifestyle decisions once they reach high school.
One activity that SADD chapters in North Dakota have been involved with is called Reality Check. In this program, high school students act as teachers and role models to upper-level elementary school students. The SADD students discuss some of the decisions students are faced with when they reach high school and talk about the best outcomes that can result from those decisions. The elementary students learn some valuable information from their role models - making the lessons more believable and impactful.
There are many things your SADD chapter can do to get the future generations of SADD students excited and involved in what your chapter is doing. In addition to working actively with elementary school students, if your middle school doesn't have its own SADD chapter, encourage the students to start one; SADD is extremely important to students in middle school. In smaller communities, you might have a joint SADD chapter with middle school and high school students. Make sure to include activities that appeal to younger students, such as Friday night activities at the local YMCA or similar organization or movie nights.
When your SADD chapter reaches out to younger students, the difference will be seen for years to come in your high school and community!

SADD Store Contest Results!
|
At left is the winning entry in the SADD Store's attitudes for living photo contest. Congratulations to Nassau County PACE SADD, who won $500. Advisor Lee Hendrickson reports that they used this "puzzle" theme in other events as well.
Although Nassau County PACE SADD's photo was a terrific entry that likely would have won any contest, they were also the only SADD chapter to submit a photo to the contest. Keep an eye on The SADDvocate for future contests and awards, because your chapter could come away a winner!
Remember that the SADD Store offers lots of great products. You can buy SADD balloons and posters to decorate for your next SADD activity or stock up on pencils, pens, stickers, or key chains to give away. Why not raffle off SADD merchandise at a school event to raise money for your chapter? SADD clothing makes great birthday gifts, too!
For more information or to order, visit saddstore.com, call the SADD Store at 1-800-394-0090, or e-mail saddstore@workflowone.com.

Don't forget that the SADD National Field Services
Department is here to provide help and support to chapters, especially those in
states without State Coordinators. Just call 1-877-SADD-INC or e-mail cegan@sadd.org for service.
Please spread the word about
this newsletter! You can sign up on the sadd.org website to receive it, and we'd like as many students and
advisors as possible to sign up. The SADDvocate will be
published every month during the school year, with no issues in July or August.
If you'd like to forward the newsletter
to others, please DON'T forward it within your e-mail program, which distorts
the formatting, links, and graphics. Instead, use the "Forward This Issue to a Friend" link at
the top or bottom left of this newsletter. If it's easier, you can simply give them a link to the newsletter where it is posted online. An archive of past issues of The SADDvocate is available here. The SADDvocate is designed to be visually appealing and colorful, with graphics and photos throughout. Make sure you are enabling images in your e-mail program to see it properly. If you receive only a text version of the newsletter, ask your IT person at school how you can receive HTML messages to get the full benefit of this newsletter.
Thanks again
for all you do for SADD!
Sincerely,

Christopher Egan, Director of Field Services |
