Greetings!

Welcome to another issue of The SADDvocate!  The year is coming to an end, and after an enjoyable Thanksgiving, we prepare for winter weather - at least here in Massachusetts!  From all of us at the SADD National office, we wish you and your families a happy and safe holiday season!

Here's a reminder to encourage all students in your chapter to sign up for The SADDvocate - just have them visit the sadd.org homepage to join!  If it's easier, you can send a list of names and e-mail addresses for your chapter to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org

Forward this issue to a FriendIf they want to see what it's all about before signing up, you can forward this newsletter to them by clicking this graphic.

We also want all advisors and students to join our social networks - click the links on the left bar to join our Facebook group or MySpace page.  We reached our goal of 1,000 Facebook friends months early - help us get to 2,000 by joining us online today!
Please Use the Logo - It's Online Now!
SADD logo tinyYou may be aware that SADD National has carefully controlled use of the SADD logo, and we often asked chapters to contact us for permission to use high-resolution versions of the logo on various items.

Unfortunately, this led to many chapters not using the logo at all and just using the word "SADD" or creating their own logos.  We want to change that - our goal is to increase the "graphic identity" of SADD (where the logo reinforces our name change and name recognition).

So, starting right now, the SADD logo is freely available on our website for chapters, in a variety of high-resolution formats.  Please note that these logos may be used by registered SADD chapters only - businesses and nonprofit agencies must still obtain permission before using the SADD name or logo.

In the past, we also prohibited chapters from using the logo on t-shirts and other items unless you ordered them from the SADD Store.  While we still believe the SADD Store offers great items at reasonable prices, you may now use the logo on t-shirts you print locally.

To make sure the logo is used properly, SADD National has developed a Graphic Standards Manual that outlines basic rules for usage.  The Graphic Standards Manual also contains useful tips for using the name "SADD" in print: Did you know you should never put periods between the letters in "SADD?"  To learn more, click here to download the Graphic Standards Manual.

We hope you'll help us by using the logo (following the rules in the Graphic Standards Manual, of course) on all your materials.  Click here to download the logo today!
2009 SADD National Conference News!

2009 conference logoRegistration will open next week for the 2009 SADD National Conference, Climbing the Hill, which will be held at the Bethesda North Marriott in Bethesda, Maryland, July 12-15, 2009!

The SADD National Conference is a fantastic opportunity to network with more than 500 youth and adults, all committed to the prevention of destructive decisions in their schools and communities.  This year, we have the unique opportunity to return to the Washington, D.C., area to focus strongly on advocacy efforts and prevention education and explore Capitol Hill!

Conference details, a Call for Workshops, registration forms, fund-raising tips, and more will be available next week!  Check the sadd.org homepage to download the registration packet.

The conference will be preceded by a special two-day SADD SPEAKs (Students for Policy, Education, Advocacy, and Knowledge) advocacy training for a small number of students selected from an application pool.  Applications and more information about SPEAKs will also be available online next week - and applications are due January 21, 2009.  If you're interested in the program, you should begin putting together some of the application materials now: obtain the names of your U.S. legislators (two in the Senate and one in the House of Representatives) and make a list of the major traffic safety issues facing teens today.  The application packet will have more details - be sure to check it out next week.

We hope you're able to join us in July, and we encourage you to start your fund-raising today!  Click here for tips and ideas to help get you to the conference.

Hope to see you in July 2009!
Important Reminders
Don't forget that applications are now being accepted for the 2009-2010 SADD National Student of the Year (SOY) and Student Leadership Council (SLC).  Applicants must be current juniors or seniors in high school.

Many states with SADD State Coordinators often have a process for nominating one student from the state to the SLC or as the SOY.  If you're in a state with a State Coordinator, you should contact that person directly to learn if a process exists.  Contact information can be found here.

If you're in a state without a State Coordinator, you can request an application by contacting Ashley Conners at 1-877-SADD-INC (723-3462) or at aconners@sadd.org.  Ashley is also available for any questions about the process.  Hurry!  Applications must be postmarked by Friday, January 23.

add nothing logoHere's a reminder about the FACE "Do What You Love" competition.  SADD partners with FACE on the Take It Back! movement, and the "Life at its Best - Add Nothing" campaign is one part of that movement.  FACE wants you to tell them what you do sober - see the addnothing.org website for examples.

FACE will pick one idea to add to the campaign, and the winner will receive recognition and Take It Back! Gear Packs.  The deadline to enter has been extended until December 19th, so there's still time for you to enter!
Chapter Spotlight: Shelton SADD
Shelton SADD
In the Spotlight this month are Shelton High School SADD and Oakland Bay Junior High School SADD in Shelton, Washington.

The two SADD chapters held a "Kick Butts" event at their local skateboard park to raise awareness of teen smoking.  While tremendous progress has been made in reducing teen smoking, these SADD chapters wanted to remind the public that the problem has not been completely solved.

Joined by Miss Washington and the mayor of Shelton, the students picked up 2,300 discarded cigarette butts in just 25 minutes at a skate park frequented by mostly teens, illustrating the scope of the issue.

Shelton High SADD advisor Gerry Apple (who also serves as Washington's SADD State Coordinator) reports that the event was a joint SADD and Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) project and involved public health and other officials.

Congratulations to Shelton High SADD and Oakland Bay Junior High SADD for their hard work on this project!

If you'd like to see YOUR chapter featured in the Spotlight, be sure to let us know what you're doing!  Send news to Chris Egan, SADD National Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org or the mailing address at the bottom of this newsletter.
SADD Store - New Products!
believe notecardSADD will soon be expanding its attitudes for living product line to include a set of notecards inspired by the popular poster series designs.  Our designer has captured the essence of each attitude - believe, strive, inspire, and laugh - on individual cards as well as a card with the entire attitudes phrase: "believe in yourself, strive to make a difference, inspire others, and laugh along the way."  The folded notecards, printed on matte card stock, have a blank interior for your personalized message.  Each set includes multiples of each of the five designs, and you can choose from an elegant black and white set or notecards printed in full color.

The notecards are currently in production, but keep your eyes on the SADD Store, because we'll unveil these two distinctive notecard sets in the near future.  They'll make a great gift for anyone!

For more information or to order, visit saddstore.com, call the SADD Store at 1-800-394-0090, or e-mail saddstore@workflowone.com.
Chapter Toolbox
toolboxEach month, a member of the SADD National Student Leadership Council (SLC) will write a column designed to help SADD chapters - activity ideas, meeting tips, and other useful topics.  This month's article is from SLC member Brittany Cobb of Orlando, Florida.

BrittanyWhether it's SADD National or your local SADD chapter, to make programs a success, organization and planning are key.  With these simple tips, you'll be on your way to improving your SADD meetings and activities.

Structure Your Meetings
One of the most important elements to any successful meeting is an agenda.  Without it, running a meeting can be almost painful.  An agenda is an easy way to keep track of what was discussed, what wasn't, and what should go on the next agenda.  And the list of topics keeps your members focused on the items at hand.  However, don't let your SADD meetings become too predictable.  Switch them up every now and then - try starting off with a fun icebreaker or have a party every month to make it easier for students to get to know each other.

Rules of Etiquette
Everyone knows how distracting interruptions can be, but with a few simple rules they can be avoided.  To improve effectiveness, have a set of rules for your students to follow during meetings.  For example, punctuality is a must, especially for officers and the chair of the meeting.  Officers should expect to come 5-10 minutes before the meeting starts and leave 5-10 minutes after the meeting ends.  This extra time can be used for preparation and to answer any questions about the topics discussed at the meeting.  Two other rules will help make the meeting a success - remember to always show respect to your peers and to be courteous to those speaking or presenting at the meeting.

Delegate, Delegate, and Delegate!
I know most chapters have that one person in charge of making sure everything runs smoothly, but one person shouldn't feel responsible for all the work.  The progress and work should be a collective effort of the entire chapter, not just a handful of people or the officers.  Include and involve everyone by delegating responsibilities to the other students in your chapter.  You'll have a united effort that will further ensure your chapter's success.

Remember, you're all working towards a common goal.  A little planning and organization will go a long way!
Shop the SADD eMall Today!
SADD EMall buttonDecember is a time for celebrating with friends and family - and taking lots of photos!  Instead of leaving the photos on your camera like last year, upload and print them through the Snapfish, Kodak, VistaPrint, or Zazzle stores in the SADD eMall.  These stores also allow you to create custom greeting cards, and Zazzle even gives you the option of creating your own custom postage stamps!

Remember, when you shop at online stores through the SADD eMall at sadd-emall.com, a portion of your purchase will support SADD programs and activities.  Retailers automatically generate funds for SADD that average 3 percent (and can be as much as 25 percent) of your purchase - all at no extra cost to you!

Many stores are encouraging shopping online by offering holiday discounts.  More than 40 stores are offering promotions this month, including FTD, PC Mall, Apple Store, Buy.com, Best Buy, Eastern Mountain Sports, and Organize.com.  Save time and order online!

Helping SADD while making your everyday purchases is easy.  Simply visit sadd-emall.com, click on the store of your choice, and do your shopping.
Don't forget that the SADD National Field Services Department is here to provide help and support to chapters, especially those in states without State Coordinators.  Just call 1-877-SADD-INC or e-mail cegan@sadd.org for service.

Please spread the word about this newsletter!  You can sign up
on the sadd.org website to receive it, and we'd like as many students and advisors as possible to sign up.  The SADDvocate will be published every month during the school year, with no issues in July or August.  An archive of past issues of The SADDvocate is available here.

If you'd like to forward the newsletter to others, please DON'T forward it within your e-mail program, which distorts the formatting, links, and graphics.  Instead, use the "Forward This Issue to a Friend" link at the top or bottom left of this newsletter.

The SADDvocate is designed to be visually appealing and colorful, with graphics and photos throughout.  Make sure you are enabling images in your e-mail program to see it properly.  If you receive only a text version of the newsletter, ask your IT person at school how you can receive HTML messages to get the full benefit of this newsletter.

Thanks again for all you do for SADD!

Sincerely,

Christopher Egan, Director of Field Services
