New Contests and Partnerships
dollar signDo you want to help the environment and make money at the same time?  SADD is working with a new cell-phone donation company that will work with chapters to get cell phones, with their harmful batteries and other toxic chemicals, out of the trash and replace them with cash in your hand.

Unlike other cell phone donation programs, in which many phones were worthless, Charitable Recycling pays you $1 for every phone.  It's simple to get started.  Contact Charitable Recycling, and they will customize a prepaid shipping label for you.  Then collect phones, mail them back for free with the shipping label, and you'll receive $1 for every phone collected.

Even better, the shipping label is a pdf form that can be e-mailed to anyone - send it to parents, relatives, local companies, and anyone else anywhere in the country with an old, unused cell phone.  The shipping label contains a bar code that identifies your chapter - so you'll receive $1 per phone for any phone shipped to Charitable Recycling using that shipping label.

Contact Jonnie Sullivan at Charitable Recycling by clicking here to get started.  Include your chapter name, contact person, address, and phone number.  This can be a great fund-raiser for your chapter.

add nothing logoWe also want to make sure you know about the new FACE "Do What You Love" competition.  SADD partners with FACE on the Take It Back! movement, and the "Life at its Best - Add Nothing" campaign is one part of that movement.  FACE wants you to tell them what you do sober - see the addnothing.org website for examples.

FACE will pick one idea to add to the campaign, and the winner will receive recognition and Take It Back! Gear Packs.  For the rules and application form, click here.
2009 Conference and Fund-Raising Tips

capitol dome graphicPlans are underway for the 2009 SADD National Conference, which will be held in Washington, D.C.  Hold the dates - we're tentatively planning for Sunday, July 12, to Wednesday, July 15, 2009, preceded by a special two-day "SADD SPEAKs" advocacy training for a small number of students selected from an application pool.  More information and details will be coming soon!

We hope you are able to join us next July and encourage you to start your fund-raising today!  Here are some suggestions.
  • Ask for help.  Write a letter to relatives, friends, and anyone else who may support you.  Your chapter can do this as a group, approaching local businesses and networking groups for sponsorship.  Offer to make a presentation when your return about what you learned.
  • Organize a dance.  Bring in a DJ or just borrow sound equipment and use an iPod.  Charge admission and sell refreshments.
  • Host a bake sale or run a food stand at sports events or community fairs.
  • Hold a special event, such as a Prom Fashion Show, Battle of the Bands, Talent Show, or others.  Charge admission to raise funds, and be sure to use the opportunity to promote SADD's safety messaging.
See elsewhere in this newsletter for additional ideas.  We hope to see you next summer!

Don't forget that Drowsy Driving Prevention Week will happen November 10-16, 2008.  SADD partners with the National Sleep Foundation on this important and often overlooked issue.  Visit drowsydriving.org for resources and activity ideas, and begin planning your chapter's activities for this week now!

Mix it Up logoThursday, November 13, 2008, is Mix It Up at Lunch Day!  This event, which is happening at thousands of schools across the country, is designed to get students to meet others and break down cliques and stereotypes by having everyone sit at a different spot during lunch for one day.  We encourage SADD chapters to lead the planning of this event if it's not already happening at your school.  Click here for more information, and make sure to check out all the resources available - free brochures, year-round activity plans to follow up on the event, and downloadable posters and stickers.

shirockSHIROCK is an up-and-coming rock band from Nashville.  The band has a commitment to more than just music, however.  Lead singer Chuck Shirock was the vice president of his SADD chapter in high school, and the band has played state SADD conferences (to rave reviews) and at high schools across the country, often with the support of the school's SADD chapter.

To learn more about SHIROCK and check out their positive, upbeat music, visit myspace.com/shirock.  If you're potentially interested in bringing SHIROCK to your school, contact Chuck Shirock directly at chuck@shirock.net

thinkb4youspeakThe Ad Council has also just begun a new program with GLSEN called "Think B4 You Speak" to discourage the use of the phrase "That's so gay."  The campaign includes PSAs featuring Hillary Duff as well the opportunity to upload your own videos and other content.  Visit ThinkB4YouSpeak.com to learn more.

Chapter Spotlight - Pepperell SADD
Pepperell SADD
In the Spotlight this month is Pepperell High School SADD in Lindale, Georgia.

Pepperell SADD has enjoyed a number of successes in recent months.  They were one of 18 SADD chapters to win a $1,000 award from NOYS (National Organizations for Youth Safety) in the National Youth Traffic Safety Month (NYTSM) activity competition in May.

Pepperell SADD's NYTSM activity promoted the Floyd County Teen Report Line, an anonymous tip line operated by the Floyd County Sheriff's department.  The Teen Report Line takes reports from teens about drug and alcohol activity, including what teens see on the road.  With calls and text messages, teens report activity ranging from drug dealing to domestic violence through the tipline, making Floyd County a safer place.

Pepperell SADD also won first place in the 60th Annual Northwest Georgia Coosa Valley Fair for their exhibit display, entitled "Driving Distractions: Cause and Effect."  The display, pictured above with chapter students, featured common causes of distracted driving on one side and the effects (car parts intended to represent a crash) on the other, all labeled with detailed information and statistics.

SADD advisor Alana Ellenburg reported that the chapter received $300 for their first place award, which they will put towards future SADD projects.  Congratulations to Pepperell High School SADD for all their hard work and success!

If you'd like to see YOUR chapter featured in the Spotlight, be sure to let us know what you're doing!  Send news to Chris Egan, SADD National Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org or the mailing address at the bottom of this newsletter.

afl posterSADD's attitudes for living campaign is going strong.  Believe in yourself, strive to make a difference, inspire others, and laugh along the way. How does your SADD chapter embody these attitudes?

We're sponsoring a multimedia contest to find out!  Your chapter can submit a photo OR a video showing how you represent these attitudes.  Winners receive cash prizes, and the deadline is October 31.  To learn more and download the contest rules, click here.
Real Life SADD
We want to tell you about a new feature on our website called "Real Life SADD."  Have you ever wondered what creative activities and programs other chapters have conducted?  Has your chapter created an activity you want to share with other chapters?  SADD now has a place for chapters to learn about new, unique, and creative activities!

You can browse through activities from our "Activity of the Year" award winners in the past, and if you've got something to share, it's easy to upload your idea for other chapters to see!  Visit Real Life SADD by clicking here - and start sharing your ideas today.

Don't forget that the SADD National Field Services Department is here to provide help and support to chapters, especially those in states without State Coordinators.  Just call 1-877-SADD-INC or e-mail cegan@sadd.org for service.

Please spread the word about this newsletter!  You can sign up to receive it
on the sadd.org website, and we'd like as many students and advisors as possible to sign up.  The SADDvocate will be published every month during the school year, with no issues in July or August.  An archive of past issues of The SADDvocate is available here.

If you'd like to forward the newsletter to others, please DON'T forward it within your e-mail program, which distorts the formatting, links, and graphics.  Instead, use the "Forward This Issue to a Friend" link at the top or bottom left of this newsletter.

The SADDvocate is designed to be visually appealing and colorful, with graphics and photos throughout.  Make sure you are enabling images in your e-mail program to see it properly.  If you receive only a text version of the newsletter, ask your IT person at school how you can receive HTML messages to get the full benefit of this newsletter.

Thanks again for all you do for SADD!

Sincerely,

Christopher Egan, Director of Field Services
