Don't Forget to Register!
|
|
We ask ALL chapters to register/update their information once each school year.
The best time to do this is once your chapter is up and running at the start of the new school year. So put that on your "to do" list for when you're back in school!
Thanks for helping us keep our database current - we want to make sure you get all our important SADD information. |

Greetings!
School has ended for many students, and for the rest it will end shortly. As we wrap up the school year and busily plan for the SADD National Conference in a couple of weeks, we have a shortened version of The SADDvocate for you this month. Here's a reminder to encourage all members of your chapter to sign up to receive The SADDvocate. Just have them visit the sadd.org homepage to join! If it's easier, you can send a list of e-mail addresses for your chapter to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org. If they want to see what it's all about before signing up, you can forward this newsletter to them by clicking the link below. |

New Rural Traffic Safety Competition!
|
National Youth Traffic Safety Month (NYTSM), sponsored by the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS), took place in May. We say "Thanks" to those of you who did traffic safety events and to those who submitted your project to NOYS to try to win one of 50 $1,000 awards.
There's a brand-new contest that's just been launched as a belated part of NYTSM. Called the "Rural Youth Traffic Safety Message Competition," the project involves creating a youth traffic safety project message campaign and getting the word out through television, radio, and print media. Is your chapter in a rural area? Think about applying today! Applications are due by June 30. Ten finalists will be chosen in July and given $500 to put their message campaigns into action in September and October, with regular reports. Winners will be chosen in November, with $5,000 for the first-place team, $2,000 for second place, and $1,000 for third place. The top three teams will also receive a trip to Washington, D.C. for the advisor and one youth representative to receive their awards from the Department of Transportation!
Remember, the deadline to apply is June 30, so start working on this right away! For more information, visit the NYTSM website. |

We're Taking A Break ...
|
Teachers and students across the country are enjoying their summer break, or are about to, as they finish classes for the year. Just like you, The SADDvocate is taking a break for the summer, too (unfortunately, that doesn't apply to SADD National staff!).
There will be no July or August issues of The SADDvocate. Look for the next issue in early September as we kick off another great year of SADD making a difference!

Thanks for Voting for SADD!
|
We extend our thanks to all of you who voted for one of the three SADD chapters in the NYTSM Act Out Loud competition. The Notre Dame Prep SADD chapter from Scottsdale, Arizona, finished second in the voting and received $5,000! Congrats go to them and to Chelsea High SADD from Chelsea, Vermont, and Dermott High EAST Lab TOPS/SADD from Dermott, Arkansas, who were the other two SADD chapter finalists.

Conference Reminder
|
We're looking forward to seeing many of you in less than two weeks out in Phoenix, Arizona.
Save room in your suitcase for some school supplies. We are
encouraging conference attendees to pack a donation of school supplies that
will benefit needy children in the Phoenix
school system. In addition, we will be collecting used backpacks in good
condition for the children. Donations should be dropped off at the SADD
Information Desk.
If you're not attending conference or if you have too many
donations to pack, school supplies can be mailed to Jessica Smith at Arizona
SADD, 5333 W. Misty Willow Lane, Glendale, AZ 85310.

Chapter Spotlight: Fort Dodge SADD
|
In the Spotlight this month is Fort Dodge Senior High School SADD from Fort Dodge, Iowa. Fort Dodge SADD ran a "Safe Summer Send-off" recently to end the school year. Some of the activities included a rock-climbing wall (pictured), a sand volleyball tournament and a disc golf tournament, and the event was capped off with a bonfire. There were several purposes for the event: to put on a fun, alcohol-free event for students to celebrate the end of the school year in a healthy way, to promote SADD, and to recruit prospective SADD students for the fall. The Parks and Recreation Department donated the use of the community park, local businesses chipped in with donations, and parents and students volunteered to make the event happen. Fort Dodge SADD Advisor Todd Constable reports that the event was
successful and their SADD chapter has already begun talking about next year's event! Creating alternative, safe, alcohol-free events is an important way SADD chapters can begin changing the culture in their communities. This ambitious event accomplished that goal and also attracted plenty of attention in the media and the school. Congrats to everyone at Fort Dodge Senior High School
SADD for their hard work! If you'd like to see YOUR chapter featured in The SADDvocate or in our print newsletter, Decisions, be sure to let us know what you're doing! Include a picture or two if you can. Send news to Chris Egan, SADD National Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org or at the mailing address at the bottom of this e-mail. Material from the Fort Dodge Messenger was used in this report. |

Don't forget that the SADD National Field Services
Department is here to provide help and support to chapters, especially those in
states without State Coordinators. Just call 1-877-SADD-INC or e-mail cegan@sadd.org for service.
Please spread the word about
this newsletter! You can sign up to receive it on the sadd.org website, and we'd like as many students and
advisors as possible to sign up. The SADDvocate will be
published every month during the school year, with no issues in July or August.
If you'd like to forward the newsletter
to others, please DON'T forward it within your e-mail program, which distorts
the formatting, links, and graphics. Instead, use the "Forward This Issue to a Friend" link at
the top or bottom left of this newsletter.
The SADDvocate is designed to be visually appealing and colorful, with graphics and photos throughout. Make sure you are enabling images in your e-mail program to see it properly. If you receive only a text version of the newsletter, ask your IT person at school how you can receive HTML messages to get the full benefit of this newsletter.
Thanks again
for all you do for SADD!
Sincerely,

Christopher Egan, Director of Field Services |
