Sasha Willingham picHello, all, and welcome to the second issue of the SADD e-newsletter!  I'm Sasha Willingham, SADD's National Student of the Year, and I'm excited and proud to be representing all of you in the year ahead!

I'm from Russellville, Alabama, and I attend Jacksonville State University.  I have been in SADD for six years and have been very active for all of those years.  I really believe in SADD's mission, and I joined SADD because I wanted to help my peers understand that there were better ways of dealing with problems than using alcohol and drugs and making other destructive decisions.

School has begun again, and we're all getting back in the swing of things.  School is a place to learn and also hang out and have fun with friends.  A lot of temptations will be coming our way with underage drinking at parties and weekend events.  Be aware of all that is going on around you - even though you may not be making destructive decisions, it's easy to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Please take advantage of all the resources mentioned in this newsletter, and keep in touch with SADD National!  We want everyone to receive this e-newsletter, so please encourage all SADD students and advisors to sign up at www.sadd.org.

I look forward to a great year ahead!
We Have a Name!
As announced in our first issue in June, SADD held a naming contest to name this student/advisor e-newsletter.  We received nearly 100 entries from all over the country.  Thanks to all of you who submitted a suggestion!

The winner was selected by the SADD National Student Leadership Council (SLC), SADD State Coordinators, and the SADD National Staff.  The choice is "The SADDvocate - Supporting Safe Choices," as you can see above in the title bar.

Congratulations go to Ashley Davidson for suggesting the winning name!  Ashley lives in New Hampshire, but she goes to school in Vermont and has been a part of VTLSP/Vermont SADD.  Ashley is on a big winning streak this year as she also won the EMPOWERED individual photo contest, too, as announced at the SADD National Conference in New Orleans!

As the winner of the naming contest, Ashley will receive a $100 cash prize.  Congratulations again to Ashley, and welcome, everyone, to The SADDvocate!
Chapter Fundraising Ideas
boston market logo
There are lots of fundraising opportunities for your chapter.  One of the biggest is with one of SADD's corporate partners, Boston Market.  Their "Time for your School" program allows your chapter to collect up to 40% of your local store's revenue for one evening.  To learn more about this exciting opportunity, visit the Boston Market Time for your School MySpace page.

Macy's Shop for a Cause
If you have a Macy's near you, check out their annual "Shop for a Cause" promotion.  Just ask for the store manager to get special shopping passes.  Your chapter sells them for $5 each and keeps 100% of the proceeds.  People who buy the passes use them to get 20% off their purchases on the shopping day - Saturday, October 13 - and are also eligible to win prizes.  Hurry, because the day is approaching fast!  For more information, call your local Macy's and speak to the store manager.
Teaming Up - "Sister SADD Chapters"
Stephen Winkler/Danny Ramsey Hey, everyone - Stephen Winkler (at top in picture) and Danny Ramsey (bottom) from the SADD National Student Leadership Council (SLC) here.

Networking is a simple word, but it can lead to numerous innovative ideas.  We met as new SLC members this summer at the SADD National Conference in New Orleans, and, as a result, decided to put our own spin on networking.  Although we're nearly 600 miles apart, Eastern Hancock SADD (Charlottesville, Indiana) and Nemaha Valley SADD (Seneca, Kansas) have joined together to become sisters - Sister SADD Chapters, that is!

SADD's unique decentralized structure allows individual chapters to create programs to address the specific issues in their community.  We found that both Charlottesville and Seneca are parallel in population and issues facing students.  The programs and activities we have in place could be exchanged to bring new ideas and diversity to each other's SADD programming.

With the help of technology, Eastern Hancock and Nemaha Valley SADD have successfully contributed to one another's chapter.  You can get in on the sisterly love, too!  Just find another chapter similar to yours - it can be a chapter from across the country or even just across the state.  Tools such as Facebook and MySpace make it easy to find a chapter willing to work with you.  If you've attended state or national SADD conferences where you met up with people from other chapters, contact them to see if they're looking for new ideas.

Although the Sister SADD Chapter movement is still in its developing stages, it has already proved beneficial in so many ways.  From providing functional resources to establishing lifelong friendships, finding a sister chapter has really helped both of our schools.  We hope it will do the same for you!
Bring "familyfocus" to Your School!
Reality Gap cardSADD's familyfocus is part of its national speaker series.  SADD National's Chairman and CEO Stephen Wallace speaks to audiences about the "Reality Gap" - results from SADD's groundbreaking research that reveal what parents don't know and what teens are doing.

That's right - you can bring SADD's Chairman and CEO to your school!  This innovative program brings teens and parents together in an evening presentation, - because SADD knows that parent involvement is key in helping teens make safe choices.

Chapter Spotlight - Choctaw Junior High SADD
Choctaw JHS SADDChoctaw Junior High SADD in Choctaw, Oklahoma, is in the Spotlight in this edition of The SADDvocate.  This chapter's annual project was a student-designed sign to help promote SADD and its mission.  The signs will be posted at schools throughout the Choctaw and Nicoma Park school districts, as well as on Main Street in both communities.  What a great way to get permanent exposure for SADD!

The Choctaw Junior High SADD chapter is a strong and growing chapter, with more than 150 students involved.  They've made an effort of connecting with school administrators, parents, community leaders, police, and elected officials, many of whom are pictured with SADD students above. Even Choctaw Mayor Randy Ross attended the kickoff event (and is pictured at the lower left).

Congratulations to Choctaw Junior High SADD! Please take their example, and have your chapter reach out to the community today!

Drowsy Driving Prevention Week Coming Soon!
drowsy driving logoThe National Sleep Foundation is holding its first Drowsy Driving Prevention Week November 5-11, and SADD is proud to support this important campaign.  Drowsy driving is an often-overlooked danger, but estimates indicate that it causes 100,000 crashes and 1,500 deaths every year.

High-achieving young people - like those in SADD - are particularly at risk, since they may stay up late studying or joining in alcohol-free celebrations.  Staying awake for 24 consecutive hours results in impairment in driving skills comparable to having a .10 blood alcohol content!

The week will feature an online drowsy driving prevention toolkit; a pledge between teens and parents regarding drowsy driving, similar to the Contract for Life; a state-by-state report card on laws addressing drowsy driving; and an online memorial to victims of drowsy driving crashes.

More information will be coming soon on this important week.  Keep checking www.drowsydriving.org to learn more.
100 Best Communities for Young People
100 best logoAmerica's Promise is once again selecting the 100 Best Communities for Young People in the United States.

Winners are eligible to apply for grant funding and will receive national media attention.  The most successful applications are submitted by mayors or other elected officials, so SADD chapters should push their local officials to apply and help them prepare the application.  The deadline to apply is November 2.  Click here to learn more.
On behalf of the SADD National Staff and the SLC, we want to say "Thanks so much" for all you do for SADD.  The Field Services Department is here to provide help and support to chapters, especially those in states without State Coordinators.  Just call 877-SADD-INC or e-mail cegan@sadd.org or kfrench@sadd.org for service.

Please spread the word about this newsletter!  You can sign up to receive it on the
www.sadd.org Web site, and we'd like as many students and advisors as possible sign up to receive it.  The SADDvocate will be published every other month during the school year, with the next issue scheduled for November 2007.

We'll resend this newsletter to any new subscribers at the end of this month, so encourage people to sign up, and they'll soon get their own copy of it.  If you'd like to forward the newsletter to others, please DON'T forward it within your e-mail program, which distorts the formatting, links, and graphics.  Instead, use the "Forward Email" link at the bottom left of this newsletter.

If you received this newsletter and are no longer connected to SADD, please ask the new advisor to sign up to receive it.  You can use the SafeUnsubscribe link below to remove your name from our list if you no longer want to receive e-mails from us.

Thanks again for all you do for SADD!
Sincerely,
