Buford Highway Pedestrian Road Safety Audit
|
PEDS recently launched a project promoting increased use of safety tools the Federal Highway Administration has identified as "proven safety countermeasures." These include road diets, medians, median refuge islands, and driveway consolidation. | |
Buford Highway has little car traffic, even at rush hour, which makes it a good candidate for a road diet.
| As part of this project, PEDS is conducting a Pedestrian Road Safety Audit on a 1.3 mile segment of Buford Highway from Afton Lane to Dering Circle in DeKalb County. A multi-disciplinary team will meet later this week to discuss stakeholder needs. On Buford Highway, signalized intersections are few and far between. And even these can be quite dangerous to cross.
"Cars are going that way and this way, if you don't have eyes in the back of your head you will be hit," a pedestrian crossing at Clairmont Road told us. "Cars will not slow down to let you go." The northern leg of the intersection is closed to pedestrians. As a result, people have to cross 18 lanes of high speed traffic, partly without a walk signal, to reach the other side of the street. PEDS thanks FHWA for the grant that helps enable us to encourage transportation agencies to make Georgia's high speed, multi-lane roads safer for people on foot. The FHWA grant expires September 3 0, so please help us maintain the momentum for Buford Highway safety improvements by making a special contribution to PEDS.
