Cost-effective Sidewalk Maintenance
PEDS in the News
Job Opening: Program Manager
January 17 Pizza Party

Does delegating sidewalk maintenance to property owners waste money?
Like many cities, Atlanta delegates the cost of sidewalk and curb repairs to abutting property owners. The estimated $152 million backlog of broken or uneven sidewalks and curbs in the City  provides strong evidence that the City's sidewalk maintenance program doesn't work.

cement truckBut to what extent does repairing sidewalks in a piecemeal way also increase maintenance costs? How much less would it cost to repair sidewalks on a street by street or a neighborhood by neighborhood basis?

To answer these questions, PEDS is collaborating with the Urban Land Institute's Atlanta District Council. Participants in its Center for Leadership program will estimate cost inefficiencies in one neighborhood in each
of the four quadrants of the City. Field work on the project begins next week.
AJC editor recognizes sidewalks near transit should be a "no-brainer"
PEDS thanks AJC Opinion Page editor Tom Sabulis for recognizing the importance of including pedestrian issues in its coverage of transportation issues. PEDS President Sally Flocks thanks Sabulis for the opportunity to publish a guest column explaining why pedestrian facilities will become increasingly important as the region's population ages.

PEDS also appreciates Atlanta City Council member Kwanza Hall's commitment to introducing "complete streets" legislation and to increasing funding for sidewalk repairs in the City.
