Highly visual, interactive classroom training and walkabout that teach the proper design of accessible work zones for pedestrians.  

  • Review federal design guidelines, including ADA requirements, the 2009 MUTCD Standards for Accessible Work Zones, and PROWAG (Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines).
  • Learn about various components of accessible work zones, including channelizing devices, pathways and surfaces, accessible curb ramps, signage and audible information devices, and traffic control plans and remedies during sidewalk closures.    
  • Gain a better understanding of how people with visual impairments travel and hear from a blind pedestrian about how construction zones affect her.
  • Participate in a tour of a nearby construction site. 

 Who should attend?

  • Supervisors, crew chiefs, designers,and others who close sidewalks for short, medium or long-term construction.   
  • Traffic engineers and site inspectors
