Awards Spotlight Interdependence of Transit and Walking

GSU Officers Accepting 2010 Golden Shoe AwardAnnouncing the 2010 Golden Shoe Award winners, PEDS told the story of the interdependence of transit and walking through projects and people we honored. The Atlanta Regional Commission's on-board transit survey, for example, revealed that three out of four people walk to transit. Another ARC study showed that one-fourth of all pedestrian crashes occurred within 100 feet of transit stops.

Our award to PBS Blueprint America for a video exposing the slow pace of pedestrian improvements on dangerous roads further underscored the risk to pedestrians on their way to transit. The Awards Celebration also recognized two important infrastructure projects: Georgia State University's Decatur Street road diet and the installation of HAWK signals on Buford Highway and S. Candler Road in DeKalb County.

PEDS will continue to shine a spotlight on this important issue as we work with government officials to make access to transit safer.
