| Free Webinar: Pedestrian Treatments at Unsignalized Locations |
On high volume, multi-lane streets, research shows that
on their own, marked crosswalks do not increase pedestrian safety. Yet the limitations of crosswalks are not an excuse to do nothing. On January 21, the Pedestrian & Bicycle Information Center is holding a free
webinar that provides guidance on selecting treatment options that improve safety at
unsignalized intersections and midblock crossings.
Thursday, Jan 21 2:00 - 3:00 PM The webinar provides guidance on making decisions about using HAWK signals, raised median islands, and other measures. Click here for more information or to register.

Georgia Legislature: Opportunities and Threats
|
PEDS is monitoring and speaking up about state legislation of interest to pedestrians. Two issues are especially important this year: texting and red light cameras House Bill 938, which prohibits reading or sending text messages while operating a motor vehicle, would greatly reduce risk to all road users. Please call or email your state representative to express support for this bill. Identifying your representative is easy. If you already know who your representatives are, find their contact information here. Meanwhile, two bills threaten to eliminate red light cameras, an important safety tool in urban and suburban areas throughout the state. HB 31 prevents government agencies from using camera systems to ticket red light runners.- HB 876 prohibits government agencies or their agents from photographing people or property without first obtaining a search warrant.
Please contact your representatives to let them know you support photo-enforcement. Red light cameras have saved numerous lives since the General Assembly authorized communities to use them nearly a decade ago. PEDS will continue to join police chiefs, the Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, and others in expressing support for the safety benefits of red light cameras. |
