China Data Processing Update: Global-Z R&D Team Hard at Work for You
With more than 1.3 billion people living in the People's Republic of China it comes as no surprise that most every business with interests outside their own borders has an eye on the developments in China. As China transitions from a manufacturing society to a consumer society the opportunities are unprecedented both within and outside China.

In 2006 GZ News brought you a white paper titled "Focus on China: Marketing Data Management Strategies", where we discussed a number of significant challenges to reaching the Chinese market (e.g., language and cultural challenges, China's developing infrastructure, complex encoding issues related to the storage of Chinese text on computer systems), and described some specific techniques to overcoming these issues. If you have not read the white paper here is a link where you can download it from our archives to get specific tools and techniques that can be used to assess and improve the management of Chinese data as part of a global marketing campaign.

Fast forward to 2010 and much has been happening in Global-Z R&D department to help businesses requiring the most up to date and accurate postal data processing available for Chinese addresses.

The latest release of postal address data from China Post (so-called PAF data) is a significant improvement over previous releases, in particular:

  1. The total volume is 1.6 million individual records, nearly a ten-fold increase;
  2. The data comprises over 270,000 records at street-level, including house ranges in many cases;
  3. The data is provided both in Chinese characters ("Hanzi") and western alphabet ("Pinyin").

Global-Z has created a totally new processing module based on the above data, with the following characteristics:

  1. A significantly higher rate of records processed to completion (i.e., all required address elements identified and standardized where necessary);
  2. Greatly improved "Romanization" - that is, transliteration of address elements into western characters
  3. A higher degree of identification of address elements not part of the PAF data, such as building names, floors, units, etc.

Greetings!

Summer brings us time to relax and enjoy family and friends. Since June 11th the 2010 FIFA World Cup had helped frame many of our summer days with patriotic allegiance to our favorite teams battling it out on the South African stage, vuvuzela and all. The friendly and occasionally heated banter between rival fans has given us an enjoyable view of the world over the past weeks.

With Spain securing their victory on July 11th we congratulate them, and extend our condolences to those fans that saw their teams exit the field of play all too soon.

As international marketers we are looking beyond our borders every day. The World Cup added fun to our conversations with colleague and associates on the other side of the world. With television viewership records being broken its clear that football/soccer continues to gain popularity worldwide. How many of the 63 matches did you watch? Next? Brazil 2014!

GZ News welcomes the return of Charles Prescott, and is happy to introduce you to Jörg Schneider and Christoph Scholze. We're pleased to bring you the insight that these international business experts have to share.

  • Tracing NCOA Files - A journey through Europe
  • ~ by Jörg Schneider, International Sales Director, and Christoph Scholze, International Sales Manager, at Deutsche Post Adress GmbH & Co. KG.

    Let's start taking the plane to London, Great Britain's capital and a multicultural hub. The good news: They speak English. The even better news: They have one of the most sophisticated address cleaning and updating systems in Europe. The bad news: It's also the most complicated and confusing, with more than 16 different NCOA and suppression files, for which the quality varies significantly, and over 40 data services bureaus. So you need a good knowledge what files to use for which purpose.

    Let's take the train through the Eurotunnel to France. We're heading to the south, Libourne near Bordeaux - heart of the famous wine and headquarter of the French charade, the NCOA file from La Poste. It might take two to three days to get your data cleansed and updated. But the quality is fine, like the wine.

    In the United States, we are used to efficient, reliable, consistent and predictable services from the USPS. Sure, the USPS is in a dire state, what with tumbling direct mail volumes and , catalogs and magazines going digital and ceasing to print and mail. But the system is remarkably efficient and reasonably priced, and actually quite innovative within the boundaries set by Congress and the Postal Regulatory Commission.

    Diversity in postal systems-just a business. Europe ends the monopoly

    Life is different is many other countries. The postal service in many places is a moribund, expensive, or basically ineffective and nearly useless government bureaucracy. In much of Latin America, more mail is carried by private postal operators than by the government monopoly carriers. In most countries, this is de jure illegal, but the government will not take legal action to stop it because it, too, relies on the private carriers.

  • The Next Evolution of Marketing
  • ~ book review by Marty Shaw, Global-Z Sales & Business Development

    As marketers build their brands, the ever-present question lingering is "What's next?". Bob Gilbreath helps answer this question in his book, The Next Evolution of Marketing: Connect with Your Customers by Marketing with Meaning. He lays out his ideas about a marketing strategy he calls "meaningful marketing." It was a thought-provoking book that I recommend any marketer read.

    Bob Gilbreath, Chief Marketing Strategist at Bridge Worldwide, reminds us that the average consumer has close to 3,000 ads impressions daily. He challenges marketers to no longer "spray and pray" their marketing message hits its mark, but rather provide "intelligent interruption", offering marketing messages when and where consumers want to receive them.

    Meaningful marketing, what is it?...
