Enlighten Your Friends: Green Allegations & Summer Outdoor Party Ammunition
~ by Charles Prescott, Consultant & Editor of
The
Prescott Report
Dear Direct Mailer,
I have seen your frustration with the green
allegations that catalogs and direct mail are
responsible for global warming, the
disappearance of the tropical rain forest,
and basically the collapse of Western
civilization. This being the season of
outdoor parties, no doubt you've been
confronted by some earnest person attempting
to save you from yourself.
Let's be honest. It's hard to answer people
who assert their handful of "facts" with an
air of moral superiority. They are seriously
convinced that the world's salvation depends
on the end of direct mail.
Finally, and here we speak softly, aren't we
all a bit embarrassed that we know they are
wrong, but we don't know what to say, other
than "You're wrong, Miss."? We know direct
mail is not a major, or even minor, cause of
environmental degradation. We just need
ammunition.
Here's what to say the next time someone
tries to ruin your enjoyment of an otherwise
pleasant cocktail party. We've organized the
topics along the lines of a modified direct
mail value chain: forests and paper, paper
production, promotion production and
delivery, and waste. (This makes it easier to
remember and respond if you've enjoyed more
than one drink at your party.)
Forests and Paper.
Myth: Forests in the US and Canada are
being stripped and leveled to make catalogues
and direct mail Thousands of acres of
ancient trees hundreds of years old are cut,
hauled, chipped up and turned into paper.
Catalogers are denuding America and Europe.
Facts: World-wide, only 14% of the
trees harvested each year are used for paper
production. In the United States, the forest
cover is about the same as it was 100 years
ago and more than it was 30 years ago. This
is because farming technology has improved so
we grow more food on less land and unneeded
farm land has reverted to forest.
Get the facts...

Greetings!
Global economy-related news has taken a more
positive outlook recently.
Headlines such as "Global
Economy To Return To Growth In Late '09",
"'Recession
is over,' BofA Merrill Lynch tells
investors", "The
global economy is doing much better than
expected" encourage international
marketers, and every industry for that matter,
as each of us
is either directly or indirectly connected to
the global economy.
While less encouraging headlines could be
easily quoted in opposition, GZ News
is going
on record to say that the future is bright
indeed! It's a remarkable time to be in the
global marketing industry.
Please join us in welcoming GZ News'
feature
article contributor, Charles
Prescott. In this issue Charles brings his
consulting expertise in international
marketing and postal issues, arming us all
with facts to use and myths to defend at our
next social outing.

A Great 20th Anniversary Celebration!

Twenty years pass quickly! Global-Z was
founded in 1989 as a computer consulting
firm. Recognizing the ever-growing
need to communicate by mail with consumers
and businesses around the world, quickly
prompted the Global-Z project. Today,
Global-Z International is the world's
recognized leader in international
addressing, de-duplication and database
management solutions. While our technology
is second-to-none, it is most definitely our
outstanding "GZ family" that has brought us
to such a wonderful place. Our GZ family is
comprised of our dedicated employees and
their wonderfully supportive families. It is
our GZ family and our great customers who
have brought us to where we are today.
"Thanks" only begins to express our most
sincere appreciation.
In June the GZ family gathered in celebration
of this exciting milestone in our history. A
beautiful, warm Vermont summer day framed the
fun. Here are a few pictures
that are, well, worth a thousand words, so
we'll leave off here and let the pictures
tell the celebratory story.

Respecting the Bereaved in Canada

In Canada The Bereavement Register is a
service specifically designed to remove from
databases and mailing files, the names and
addresses of people who have died. At the
difficult time loved ones want to remember
the good times with fondness, they do not
want to be bombarded by badly targeted direct
mail to someone who has recently passed away.
Recognizing this ever-growing demand by
marketers, database administrators and
consumers alike, Global-Z has incorporated
The Bereavement Register in our service
offerings for those with Canada data
processing needs.
When someone has died receiving unwanted
direct mail can causes distress and upset the
bereaved. The Direct Marketing industry wants
to put a stop to this, and The Bereavement
Register is the only such initiative to do so
in Canada.
