Collaborate With the People Who've Been There, Done That
"We're considering marketing into Japan. Where do we start?"

"We've been successful in Western Europe now we are interested in expanding into Eastern Europe. What advice do you have for us?"

Frequently when we speak with Global-Z clients and prospective clients that either market internationally or are looking to do so, we are presented with questions that extend beyond our core expertise in global postal data processing. We have thoughts, recommendations and advice; however, there is nothing better than standing on the shoulders of someone who has been there and done what you're considering. That is, networking with your peers. Most typically the best resource we provide is to facilitate an introduction to like-minded, non- competing DM peers. Global-Z wants to bring you a free forum where you can do precisely that whenever and wherever you need it; an online International Direct Marketing Social Network.

Social networks are entering the business environment. LinkedIn is an example of social networking that is extending what started as a phenomenon for the college crowd (Facebook, MySpace, etc.). Social networks are presenting giant shifts in media, politics, relationships, culture, and not surprisingly, marketing. Importantly, we're interested to know if the concept of having a free place to go to collaborate, learn from and share with your international direct marketing peers around the world is of interest to you. A "build it and they will come" approach will likely not work effectively to foster a community of peers.

To get a glimpse into the concept of an industry-specific social network, if you've never read and/or participated in one, please check out DesignMind and Barista Exchange.

With member interaction driving its development, some resources we're considering at launch for the International Direct Marketing Social Network include:

  • Searchable discussion forum
  • Geo-specific market interest groups (e.g., Canada, Asia Pac, Europe, etc.)
  • Vertical Industry interest groups (e.g., apparel, technology, publishing, etc.)
  • Industry blog posts
  • Member profiles (private and/or public)
  • Industry events listing
  • Industry job postings
The sky is the limit with your active involvement.

Please let us know your interest level (click one):

Yes, I think this sounds interesting.

Not sure, I'd need to learn more.

No, I have no interest in an International Direct Marketing Social Network.

Thank you for your feedback!

Greetings!

Where were you twenty years ago? In 1988 the US and Canada reached a free trade agreement. CDs outsold vinyl records for the first time. A first-class stamp in the States was $0.24. Australia celebrated its bicentennial that same year. Thirty million people worked with MS-DOS back then, while the Mac IIx sold for $7,769 USD. Global-Z was just a few months away from opening our business. Time sure does pass quickly!

Where will you be in 2018 or 2028? Where will the international direct marketing industry be? In the '80s technology and economics did not impact the International DM industry to the degree they do today. We hope GZ News' articles and links help you embrace the opportunities and challenges that face us all. Remember, these are the good ol' days sometime in the future.

Please keep your feedback coming.

With continually rising print, postage and other direct mail related costs, email is a viable alternative or counterpart for direct marketers looking to acquire new customers, deliver content, fulfill product, and more.

Arguably, email makes the biggest impact to your bottom line through the successful execution of a profitable email newsletter, where the focuses are cultivating a relationship with the reader, converting prospects into paid customers, and monetizing the value of the entire readership. Email newsletter marketing is particularly attractive to international marketers, who typically spend more to acquire a single customer, as it allows you to fully maximize that customer's lifetime value.

    Here are your 5 fundamentals...
  • Targeting Audiences in Europe - List Availability Overview and Privacy Laws
  • ~ By Simon Burrell, Circulation Marketing Director of Newsweek's Atlantic Edition

In my last article in the Spring edition of GZ News I wrote about how to think local when promoting your product in European markets. In this edition, I thought I would try to give you a brief overview as to list availability for both direct mail and e-mail marketing in some key European markets as well as identify some Data Protection and Privacy issues that need to be taken into consideration when carrying out campaigns.

The French list market has not changed much over the last few years, with the last piece of legislation being passed in 2002. The market is quite permissive and as an individual you have to opt out if you do not wish to receive direct mail. Consumer e-mail lists are opt in whereas business-to-business e-mail lists are still opt out, although this is apparently set to change.

To an ever-growing extent the Internet has conditioned us to expect immediate access to everything: download your favorite song, take care of your banking, order the latest bestselling novel, all on your schedule, whenever and wherever you like. This trend continues to pervade our work life, also. We have come to expect immediate access to everything we need to do our jobs. International direct marketers are certainly no exception. In fact, immediate access to information and services is trending to be the rule for direct marketers.

    What is behind this trend?...
