THIS
IS NOT A WRESTLING MATCH! |
|||
|
If you guessed that
these are pictures of a recent World Wrestling Federation tag team match
you would not be right, although the methods shown here might be just as
dangerous. These are pictures
from an old nursing textbook showing how to move a patient. |

Here
is another bit from an old (1898) nursing text book, Occasionally the
complaint is made that a nurse has injured her back or strained herself in
some way in moving a patient. This will generally be because she has
failed to do the lifting properly. The
trouble with this quote from an old source is that the same thing is often
said today! Even more scary is this comment I recently heard from a young PT in one of our Valleys rehab facilities, When they have a heavy piece of furniture or equipment that they want moved they always call our department because we know how to lift. It is interesting but so sad that this facility would choose to use their therapists as work horses. |

Every year physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses
and other personnel who handle patients suffer pain, injury, and lost
work time. About 12% lose their
careers. This is not open to
debate; it is a matter of fact. Yet
it can be demonstrated and is demonstrated in study after study that the
introduction of mechanical lift equipment to the work place along with the
education on how to use it, and with the will to use it, reduces or
eliminates altogether the risk of injury when moving a patient. |
