OVERHEAD LIFTS |

|
|
I would hate to say how many old
fashioned, pump–up, “hoyer” type lifts I have seen gathering dust in
a closet, a garage, or the corner of a bedroom; unused and ignored.
This one kind of looks like something I once used to remove an
engine block from an old Ford V8. It is an old, old story; a person is injured or suffers a debilitating disease and can no longer lift and transfer themselves from their bed to a chair, toilet or bath. Then some well meaning person recommends this type of lift. |

They
are cheap; they are also very difficult to use.
After struggling for a while the care provider usually goes back to
moving the patient by hand. A
dangerous way to go. In one
state study it was found that nursing staff have among the highest back
and shoulder injury rates of any occupational group.
It is so sad when one person is injured while trying to help
another. There really is equipment that can be used to EFFORTLESSLY lift and transfer anybody from one place to another. It is called an overhead lift. These lifts are so versatile that it will be difficult to cover all of the ways they can be set up and used but we are going to try. Next month we will look at an overhead lift mounted on a portable track for use in multiple locations. Meanwhile, you might find the Equipment page on our website of interest. |
