“Let’s Redo the Bathroom”

Does this conversation sound familiar?

Faye:  “Al have you noticed that our bathroom is looking a little old fashioned?”

Al:  “Oh dear!  I have noticed.  Some of the tile is cracked too and there are rust spots that won’t come out.  Well, no problem, I’ll just go down to the hardware store and get some replacements."

Faye:  “I think that I would like to do more than that.  Maybe we could move things around a bit and get a little more room in there.  Remember when your mom and dad visited last Thanksgiving.  That was really fun until we discovered that they went home early because your dad had trouble using our bathroom.  Ouch!

Al:  “We aren’t getting any younger either you know.  My arthritis could put me in a wheelchair too one day.

Faye:  “Yes, but I don’t want a bathroom that looks like it belongs in a nursing home or hospital.  Yuk!  Couldn’t we make it look nice?

This is the floor plan of Faye and Al’s bathroom.  They have been putting up with this cramped space for years.

  1. the small pocket door is too narrow for easy entry
  2. there is little room to maneuver around the large linen closet door
  3. the large sink is in the way
  4. the toilet is too low for comfort
  5. shower entry is made difficult by the glass door and threshold
  6. the shower is just too small

Does this sound at all familiar?  There are ways to open this room up and make it so that even Al’s dad won’t want to leave early.  AND, to make it  attractive for Faye.  Learn how in The Accessible Home Journal next month.
