Many Enjoy Their Homes for a Lifetime

by Applying Universal Design

Universal design suggests solutions that are capable of being adjusted or modified to meet varied requirements.  It is a design approach that recognizes and accommodates the changes people experience over their lifetime.  Universal design is also referred to as a preventative design approach versus a reactive approach.

Is the access to your home barrier free?  Is at least one entrance at ground level?  How about door width?  Lighting?  Easy to operate hardware?

Is there a bench or shelf on which to place packages or a purse when unlocking the door?

How about the gardener of the house? Are there raised planters that can be tended without bending or stooping?

Are floor covering at the same level throughout the house or if there is a slight difference in height is there a beveled transition piece?

Is there room beneath the sinks in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry room for a stool or wheelchair?

Are all faucets equipped with an anti-scald device and do they all have lever-type handles?

Have you eliminated throw rugs or placed a non-slip matting between the rug and the floor?  Throw rugs are big source of 911 calls.

It is the purpose of ASI to enhance the quality of life for people that may have a debilitating disease, suffer accident trauma, or be frail do to age.  Our mission is for everyone to enjoy their home for a lifetime.
