Bikes For Life Gets Kids ActiveBicycle Colorado Providing Bicycle Education Component
Bicycle Colorado is excited to be helping with a new program called Bikes For Life, a partnership between Children's Hospital Colorado and UnitedHealthcare of Colorado. The program's goal is to encourage Colorado youth to develop healthy habits and a lifelong commitment to wellness through bicycling. Using bikes to encourage physical activity, the program includes a two-hour bicycle education clinic run by Bicycle Colorado on rules of the road, how to properly wear a helmet, how to perform a quick check of their bicycle before riding and other bicycle safety information. Each child will practice on a bicycle skills course, and many will learn to ride for the first time. Several community bicycle-safety events will also be held to demonstrate to children and families how bicycling can be used as an active form of transportation.
Children from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver and Children's Hospital Colorado clinics who qualify will receive free helmets and bicycles and commit to bicycling on a regular basis. Participants will report activity levels and height/weight measurements at key intervals over a year to track their progress, and researchers at Children's Colorado will report on how bicycling can improve health. To learn more, visit childrenscolorado.org/BikesForLife.
