Building a
Bicycle-Friendly Colorado

Bike the Byways Launches

Bike the Byways LogoBicycle Colorado is excited to announce the launch of a new program that encourages tourism to all regions of our state, adding to the estimated one billion dollars in revenue that bicycling already brings to Colorado. Bike the Byways, a joint Bicycle Colorado and Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) initiative, promotes bicycling along the state's twenty-five designated Scenic Byways routes.

Colorado's designated byways are scattered throughout the state and incorporate both paved and gravel roads. Cyclists are encouraged to register for free on the Bike the Byways website and check off each byway they complete, similar to the popular 14ers hiking checklist. Website visitors are encouraged to provide tips and feedback about each of the routes. For a limited time, receive a free T-shirt or hat for contributing your comments. Click here to read the full press release.

New Director of State Parks & Wildlife Division Appointed
Rick Cables, the Rocky Mountain regional forester for the U.S. Forest Service, has been appointed director of the newly created Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife. This new division, signed into law in early June, merges the existing Colorado State Parks, overseeing hundreds of miles of biking opportunities, and Colorado Division of Wildlife. Cables's oversight of this division and its 880 employees begins in July. For more information, read the full press release.
Bicycle Colorado Event Member Spotlight: Fort Collins Echelon Gran Fondo

Gran Fondo EchelonThe Fort Collins Gran Fondo on August 21 is a European-style cycling event that begins with a police escort through Fort Collins before heading up Rist Canyon. The descent takes riders into Buckhorn Canyon and on to Masonville, a quaint 1900s mining town. Riders continue through the grasslands along the foothills and past pristine lakes before returning to Fort Collins. With three different routes at 30, 60 or 90 miles, all levels of cyclists are encouraged to register. The Gran Fondo supports the University of Colorado Cancer Center and Poudre Valley Health System. For more information, go to the event website.

Bicycle Colorado would like to thank the organizers and riders for their commitment to building a better state for cycling. We are excited to have
the Fort Collins Gran Fondo onboard as an event member for 2011.

  • Check your bike before heading out to make sure it's in good shape.

  • There are going to be lots of people riding on the streets and especially the bike paths, so let people know when you are passing.
  • Make sure you have lights on your bike if you are going to be out riding early in the morning or at night.
