Colorado's cross-mountain bike route continues to improve with the opening this weekend of the South Canyon Trail, the second section of a planned eight-foot-wide paved trail through South Canyon near Glenwood Springs. Currently, cyclists must ride on I-70 to pass through the narrow canyon. The South Canyon Trail will eventually be part of the longer LoVa Trail, which will run 47 miles through the Colorado River Valley in Garfield County, from Glenwood Springs west to the Mesa County line. There is a 1.8 mile section still to be built to complete the project, estimated to be in 2014. An official opening ceremony is planned for this Friday at 11 a.m. at the trailhead by the old South Canyon bridge, just east of I-70 exit 111, two miles west of West Glenwood.

The project is a collaboration between LoVa, Garfield County, the city of Glenwood Springs, Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado State Parks Trails Program.
Teaching Bike Safety at Field Days
Field Day 2011
Students at Rose Hill Elementary pledge to wear their helmets.

Bicycle Colorado is hitting the elementary school field day circuit to wrap up our spring education season. For those not familiar with what field day is, it's a day where students participate in various outdoor activities. This gives us a chance to revisit the schools we taught at during the spring semester and review bicycle and pedestrian safety with a few thousand kindergarten through 5th-grade students (as well as the staff and parents). This helps them hone their bicycling skills before the summer.

The students sign safety pledges to wear their helmets when they ride, then write about and draw all the places they plan to walk and bicycle this summer.

Bicycle Colorado Event Member Spotlight: Colorado Cyclist Copper Triangle
Copper TriangleThe Colorado Cyclist Copper Triangle on August 6 is a spectacular 78-mile loop cresting three Colorado Mountain passes: Fremont Pass (elevation 11,318 feet), Tennessee Pass (elevation 10,424 feet) and Vail Pass (elevation 10,666 feet). The course passes three ski areas and is dotted with historic mining outposts and Camp Hale, the training ground for the famous 10th Mountain Division. The total elevation gain for the course is 5,981 feet. Supporting the Davis Phinney Foundation, which funds Parkinson's Disease research and resources for those challenged by the disease, the Colorado Cyclist Copper Triangle is a celebration of cycling. This event traditionally sells out quickly, so register today

Bicycle Colorado would like to thank the organizers and riders for their commitment to building a better state for cycling. We are excited to have
the Colorado Cyclist Copper Triangle onboard as an event member for 2011.
CDOT Updating Design Guide with Bike/Ped Chapter

CDOT HeadquartersAs an outcome of their bicycle and pedestrian policy, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is in the process of developing a chapter on bicycle and pedestrian facility design to be included in its Roadway Design Guide. They are currently gathering input from CDOT regions and engineers on implementation.

The chapter provides guidelines on how to accommodate bicyclists on state roadways and should be adopted later this summer.
