April 2009

Greetings!

The flowers are blooming and The Children's Science Center is gearing up for a new season of our Museum Without Walls events!  Come visit us at these upcoming community celebrations, where we will be providing hands-on science activities for children of all ages.

JLNV logoOur first event this year will be the Junior League of Northern Virginia's Strides for Success 5K Race and 1K Family Fun Run/Walk  on Sunday, April 26th. The Junior League of Northern Virginia, a founding partner of the Children's Science Center, coordinates this annual fundraiser to promote awareness about the importance of family health and wellness and the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.

In addition to a special children's event recognizing the participation of children 10 years and under, there will be a number of prizes for the top finishers and an opportunity to participate in a fabulous Fairfax Corner merchant raffle.

The event starts at 9 a.m. at Fairfax Corner at 11950 Grand Commons Ave. in Fairfax. To find our more about Strides for Success, go to the Junior League's Webs ite at www.jlnv.org, or check out the Strides for Success page on Facebook.

In May, you can meet us at two festivals set in town historic districts: Viva! Vienna! from May 23-25 and Herndon Festival from May 28-31.

The first, Viva! Vienna!, celebrates the unity and strength of the Vienna community and takes place downtown on Memorial Day weekend. The Children's Science Center joins hundreds of vendors on Sunday and Monday in offering families a day's worth of fun activities, including carnival rides and live performances on the Children's Stage. For more information, visit www.vivaviennava.org.

The next weekend, The Children's Science Center appears at the four-day Herndon Festival in downtown Herndon. Besides carnival rides and games, the event features children's entertainment, live music on three stages, fireworks, an arts and craft show, a business expo, and much more! For more information on the festival, visit www.herndonfestival.net.

The Children's Science Center would like to thank all the volunteers who made these events possible last year, and we'd like to invite familiar faces and new volunteers to once again help us provide these interactive science exhibits this year! If you'd like to volunteer, please send an e-mail to info@TheChildrensScienceCenter.org and include which event you'd like to volunteer at, what days and times you'd be available, and your contact information.

Thank you, and we hope to see you soon!

Kids' Corner
Consider This Fun Activity For Your Children

Don't have much room for a garden for the kids in the backyard? Not to worry, here's the perfect solution to get your kids' hands dirty with a natural science project!

 terrarium
Miniature Garden
From National Geographic Kids

What you'll need:
Fishbowl or glass jar of any size
Small stones
Horticultural charcoal
Potting soil
Plants of your choice (see ideas at bottom)
Scissors
Water
Decorative rocks and figurines

How to make it:
Wash the glass container in hot, soapy water. Rinse and dry completely.
Create a 1-inch layer of stones on the bottom of the jar.
     Add a 1/2-inch of charcoal.
Spoon in a 2- to 3-inch layer of potting soil. (Pile soil higher on one side to make plants visible from a side view.) Dig small holes for the roots.
Take plants out of their pots, remove extra soil from the roots, and trim damaged leaves. While the roots are still moist, place the plants in the holes and pat soil over the roots. Place taller plants in the back. Dampen the soil. Do not overwater.
Decorate with pretty rocks, animal figurines, or a garden gnome. Place in indirect sunlight. Add water when your terrarium gets dry.

Science Notes:
Have your child keep a science journal to record changes in the miniature environment, recording answers to such questions as: What happens when more plants are added? What happens when animals are added?
