My Imagination is So Strong, by Octavis K. | |
It's like a brick that can't be crushed
Even the toughest steel, it can't touch!
Always efficient, it makes progress even when I sleep
My imagination
I will always keep!
My imagination allows me to think, to believe, to dare
My imagination allows me
to go anywhere
To the moon, to the stars, to Las Vegas, even Paris
People treat their imagination so careless
But me
My imagination is so strong
I feel like I can change the world
Be a superhero, a doctor, an astronaut, a surgeon,
an artist, you see...
My imagination
Expresses me | |

Greetings!
When did you first learn... ...that a teacher /coach cared about you ...that the world didn't stop when you lost a game (or when you won) ...that helping an opponent up was a sign of strength, not weakness ...that the applause was for you ...that you belonged to a team ...that someone was looking up to you Because of supporters like you, more than 200 SCORES youth experienced these lessons in 2011. By teaching poetry, SCORES shows my students the writing skills they didn't know they already had. I've seen students transform their behavior after playing on a SCORES team, and get better test scores than their classmates. This program really changes lives. -Ms. Hearns, SCORES Writing Coach | | SCORES students performing onstage |
Help us impact the lives of more deserving students. However big or small, your gift makes a difference. - $10 gives a student a full year of writing supplies to advance her poetry
- $25 outfits a student with his own soccer equipment
- $50 provides a soccer team with healthy game day snacks for one season
- $100 provides research-based writing, soccer, and service learning curriculum to a SCORES team of future leaders
We thank you for your support of our youth, and wish you and your family a very happy holiday season. Sincerely, The staff of America SCORES St. Louis Visit us online |

Youth Publish and Perform Poetry
SCORES youth impressed judges and community members with powerful performances of their original poetry at the 2011 Poetry SLAM. Students from 7 public elementary schools stood in front of a live audience to recite original works of poetry. Congratulations to Iyontae of Jefferson Elementary for her first place individual poem, Soccer Sounds, and the Walbridge Elementary boys team for their first place group poem, Our Community Garden. Watch a highlight performance from the SLAM here. And click here to see original Poetry PSA's students created to promote their special event. Two students will be selected to read their poems at the National Poetry SLAM in New York this April.
Selected poetry from our students has been published in the national Kicker! magazine, distributed to 10,000 readers in 13 cities nationwide. We congratulate our eloquent students for their fantastic creative writing this year. Click here to read the 2011 edition of Kicker!.

Prominent Artists Turn Youth Poetry into Paintings and Music
This season, SCORES youth had the privilege of working with country hit songwriter Dave Berg to create an original song from their poems. Click here to watch a musical masterpiece in progress, highlighting the students' songwriting experience from the classroom all the way to Shock City Studios. A full version of the new song "I Can Be What I Wanna Be", will be out in the Spring, made possible by ASCAP.
Students also transformed their poems into paintings with prominent local artist Seitu James Smith, who painted an original piece reflecting the student poem called My Imagination is So Strong. Click here to watch video of the students' "Inspired Art" experience of painting and poetry performances, made possible by MIRA. |
