Students Planting Native MO Plants
Planting at the Riverfront

From showing sportsmanship at the Jamboree soccer tournament, to beautifying the Mississippi Riverfront with native plants at the SHOUT Day of Action, to creating and performing original poetry at game days to honor one another, our poet-athletes and coaches showed us what true teamwork means this season.

We at America SCORES St. Louis look forward to seeing what more is to come from this community of scholars, athletes, and leaders. We invite you to read on, and learn more about the achievements of our school champions this season.

Sincerely,

Performing at the Famous Apollo Theater

Joschula performing at the National Poetry SLAM

Joschula P. of Patrick Henry and Marcus J. of Jefferson Elementary represented St. Louis at the National Poetry SLAM at the Apollo Theater in New York this April.

Joschula loves poetry because

"It's like painting a picture with words. You express your feelings and try to capture the emotions of your audience."

Joschula's Reflection of the Apollo Experience

When we arrived at the Apollo, everyone was excited. We all ran up the long flight of steps into our very own dressing rooms where we sat our bags. That's when I realized that I was an the Apollo Stage...THE REAL THING! We got to go up on the stage and practice our poems. Then we practiced our group poem with Martha Reeves. That part was really fun because Martha Reeves taught us some old dance moves like the Mash Potato, the twist, and the old style jerk. One by one our groups were called for us to go say our poems. When my group went I was not scared at all. I got up there and gave it my all.

At the end of the SLAM we had a dessert reception. I felt like a superstar. People came up and asked me questions, and took pictures. It was fantastic, but it could not last forever. I said my last goodbyes to all of my new made friends and then headed off to the airport. As the plane took off and the once huge skyscrapers of New York turned into little small black dots, I already started to reminisce and think about all the fun that I had in New York, The Empire State.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR EVALUATION

70% of poet-athletes at Jefferson Elementary

significantly increased their athletic endurance,

averaging 7 levels of improvement in fitness testing.

Over 95% of surveyed parents say their children now exercise at least 1-2 hours on their own every week, outside of SCORES and school.

Making a Difference

Poet-athletes at Nance Elementary organized an original service-learning project this season called "Change for a Change" to support the ATAI Orphanage in Uganda, an organization which helps more than 50 orphaned children by providing food, clothing, education, and permanent homes.

As a team, they created a quilt to promote awareness of ATAI, and raised funds for the orphanage by collecting coins at their school. On May 31, 2011, poet-athletes presented the funds they raised to Annah Emuge, President and Founder of ATAI Orphanage.

Ms. Covington, an experienced Nance teacher and SCORES coach, guided the project with one message: "No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. Let your efforts rise above your excuses." Thank you to Nance coaches and poet-athletes for showing how their efforts can make a real difference in the lives of others.
Becoming Better Readers
Reading Poetry

Poet-athletes at Walbridge Elementary have shown a 94% improvement in identifying more literary devices in reading and writing, such as rhymes, metaphors, similes, and personification.

After participating in SCORES, 3 out of 4 parents say their children have increased the amount of time they read on their own by an average of 1-2 hours per week.

Testimonials

From a SCORES Parent:

"My son showed a lot of discipline. SCORES taught him how to listen and follow instructions. This program has really changed his life. He looks forward to every day in America SCORES.

"Before SCORES, my child knew nothing about soccer. Now you can't get him off the field."

From a SCORES Principal:

"Students participating in the SCORES program were eager to recite poetry and follow through on writing assignments.  This was beneficial to our MAP Testing.  Those students participating in SCORES show not only new academic abilities, but also improved social skills."

From a SCORES Student:

"Before joining SCORES I felt like a lantern that wouldn't turn on...a door without a key. But sharing my poems brought out what was always inside of me. I loved that feeling."
