    June '05

    Greetings!

Happy June! Summer is finally on its way!...We hope you all enjoyed last week's Memorial Day weekend and are ready for the sizzling summer events TWM is cooking up.

First we want to thank everyone who made it to the Another Road Home event with filmmaker Danae Elon at Cozy Cafe on May 19th. We had the perfect size group of about 16 for a very special evening getting an intimate look of how the Israeli/Palestinian conflict has affected two families. Cozy Cafe lived up to its name by providing a truly "cozy" living room-like Middle Eastern atmosphere and hospitality that allowed for a great discussion with Danae after watching a clip of the film. Many of the attendees commented on what a powerful experience it was, and thanked us for providing it for them. See below for article and photos of this event.

Coming up this month on Monday, June 20th we are focusing the TWM Spotlight on Sri Lanka: Culture, Cuisine, Conservation & Caring We'll be giving you a taste of Sri Lanka - its culture, cuisine and women's issues there in general - as well as highlighting the work of Sri Lanka Care Foundation, a nonprofit that formed in response to the tsunami and is the only organization specifically targeting the needs of women who have been affected by it. They are building homes and providing assistance for women's businesses, and we are happy to support them by having a portion of the admission cost being donated to assist in their efforts. We'll be doing this all in the funky, jungle-like East Village bar/restaurant Boa - so we hope to see you there! For a full description and listing of all Upcoming Mosaic and non-Mosaic events, please see the article link below.

We are also excited to announce that we will be holding our annual TWM Summer Fundraiser on Wednesday, July 13th so save the date for "ONE HOT HAVANA NIGHT!" This is our big event to raise much needed funds in order for The Women's Mosaic to be able to continue bringing you the types of events we've just described above! We will need your support in many different ways for it (we'll send a separate email about that) - not the least of which is is to just show up! Those of you who came to our past fundraisers, and in particular last year's "A Night in Bollywood" know we can throw one helluva party - and plan on doing it up even more this year with a live Cuban salsa band, mojitos, munchies and more! Stay tuned for more details soon.

*PLEASE NOTE: We are having a Volunteer Committee planning meeting about this event tonight June 6th at 6:30pm - see the link below. You should have received a separate email invitation about this if you checked off the "Volunteer Opportunities" list on your subscriber profile. If you are unable to attend the meeting but still want to be a part of the committee, please let us know. See details and RSVP link below.

In other news, we want to welcome our new summer intern Adrienne Winton from Brandeis University who will be helping out with all program and administrative aspects of the TWM for the next couple of months. We are still looking for other interns and volunteers, particularly in Public Relations. Just click on the Bulletin Board page of our website at for more details and to refer anyone you feel might be interested.

And of course, a reminder that one of the best ways you can support us is by becoming an official member of The Women's Mosaic - a basic membership costs less than $2.00 a month! See below for more details and a link to our Membership page.

That's all for the moment. We do hope to see you this summer, and of course, as always, please feel free to contact us with any comments, suggestions or questions you might have.

    Cheers!

LAST MONTH'S EVENT:ANOTHER ROAD HOME Screening & TalkBack
    Thursday, May 19th 6:30-9pm

We had poignant and personal evening at the perfect environment of Cozy Cafe, with Jewish Israeli filmmaker Danae Elon who screened a portion of her critically-acclaimed film Another Road Home about her search to reunite with her Muslim male Palestinian caregiver after almost 15 years. Her story and life experience really put a human face on that struggle in general for everyone who attended. The event can best be summed up in these comments:

"Danae was a terrific guest speaker -- such a personal take on so many intertwined universal, controversial issues. "

"Danae was great. I really enjoyed the opportunity to hear/experience a different perspective on Israeli/Palestinian relations. It's a better way to show the real conflict and the pain it causes from a personal level, beyond the political, economic, academic arguments, etc."

"I don't know very much about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict except for sensational news reports - this was my first experience hearing a very intimate view of what the cultural experience of life in Israel is like ...[It was a] very moving portrayal of building relationships between people of very different backgrounds - which is what The Women's Mosaic does, too."

We'll let you know when the movie comes out on DVD so you can watch it yourself!

THIS MONTH'S EVENT:SPOTLIGHT ON SRI LANKA: Culture, Cuisine, Conservation & Caring!
    Monday, June 20th 6:30-9pm

Come join us for an evening that will highlight the wonderous treasures and culture of Sri Lanka, and provide help for the women affected by the tsunami there.

Sample authentic Sri Lankan cuisine (there are no Sri Lankan restaurants left in Manhattan, so this is a real treat) while listening to a Sri Lankan woman speak about her country and women's issues there in general; a spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society talking about the biodiversity and ecotourism in that country and to Pauline Nguyen, Secretary of Sri Lanka Care Foundation, a nonprofit organization building homes and business for women effected by the tsunami. (Pauline just came back from spending over a month on the ground there!) All this will take place at the funky, jungle-themed Boa restaurant in the East Village, and a portion of the admission cost will be donated to Sri Lanka Care Foundation.
