Debunking Social Media ROI Myths

Visit our blog  by Karelisa Falkner

Last week the Liqui-Site team traveled to Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York, to talk with administrators, faculty and students about social media. We had a free-flowing, energetic
Q & A style session with the undergraduate and graduate students, who spanned such diverse majors as Communications Arts, Business, and Information Technologies.

At the close of the evening, a professor approached us and commented to the effect of "Great presentation, but is there any way to actually measure the effect of social media?"

   Issue 21  //  May 2012

SPRING IS HERE. Get Fresh. Get Social.

The weather can't make up its mind, but the flowers are popping, birds are chirping, and Liqui-Site Designs is in full swing this new quarter. Just like the change in season, we're expanding -- growing in new and innovative ways. From new partnerships and one-of-a-kind mobile apps to SEO and the latest in social media, we're loving it all.

Actually, it wasn't long ago that many businesses looked at "social media" as a trend, a fad, or thought it was an umbrella term for the 'Big 4: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube'. Those days aren't exactly over, but for savvy businesses that realize its potential, the challenge for them at present is in showing "social ROI". That is, how can a business measure social media in terms of return on investment? Well friends, thousands of businesses are seeing significant ROI from social media - using it creatively and effectively to drive new business development. But how, you ask? The May issue of Liqui-News is dedicated to giving social media a fresh, spring makeover with more information on how it can truly grow your business. Read on, reader!

Where Does Social Media Stand?
Social Media
Fortuitously, this is the time of year when some of the most esteemed social media monitoring companies release their version of a State of Social Media report. These surveys tend to be extremely cohesive. We've picked the most interesting finds and tips to give a full scope of social media at present.
  • Visitors to a company's social media page are likely to immediately visit entertainment sites, other social media sites, search engines, or email, so cross-channel marketing is imperative!
  • Upstream referral traffic from Facebook is on the incline, as Fans (Likers) are 5 times more likely to visit your website than non-fans. A Facebook fan has a considerably higher probability of purchasing, considering, and recommending a brand.
  • 40% of marketers say that the top social media question they want answered is how to measure social media results, and how to find their own customers and new prospects. (Oh have we got an answer to their question!)
  • Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs, and YouTube are the top five social media tools used by marketers, in that order. (But Pinterest is on the rise in 2012!)
  • Businesses are increasingly outsourcing their social media efforts each year - from 14% in 2010 to 28% in 2011, and now 30% in 2012! Who handles yours daily?
