Effective SEO... Possible Without Social Media?
by Douglas Lim
... Now the SEO landscape is changing again with the advent of community engagement (i.e. social media). There were rumblings in the SEO world that Google was going to take into account social media signals as part of their search ranking algorithm. Now, without a doubt, that time has come. SEOMoz surveyed hundreds of the world's best search marketers in 2011 to present a report on what factors affect SEO the most along with future factors that would have the most impact... Quite clearly, social media is playing a huge part in the search rankings and will continue to play a bigger part. Alongside this, I've found from my own testing of ranking websites, you cannot ignore social media in your SEO strategy. In fact, what we are seeing is that Google are now recognizing that websites ranking at the top which may have thousands of back links need social proof. They need to have had people Facebook like their page, tweet their page, Google +1 their page or share their page on LinkedIn. This is where the human element comes into effect that people can now validate the quality of pages by using social media and sharing it amongst their followers and friends...

GOOGLE // CHANGE IS GOOD, RIGHT?
|
This month, let's focus on the huge changes Google is implementing. On March 1st, Google's new privacy policy will be in full effect, and some websites will have already lost their coveted rankings. What Google changes mean to you as a searcher:
Google says that they're new policy reflects a "single product experience in order to ensure you can move across Gmail, Calendar, Search, YouTube, or whatever your life calls for with ease". If you're signed into Google, they can suggest search queries -- or tailor your search results -- based on the interests you've expressed in Google+, Gmail, and YouTube. They'll better understand which version of "Pink" (singer, color, brand name) or "Jaguar" (car, animal or Mac operating system) you're searching for AND get you those results faster!
What Google changes mean for your website:
If your website has several ads "above the fold", Google will penalize you by bumping it down in rank. It's all part of their new "Page Layout Algorithm". No ads? No worries! Also, sites with little content didn't fare well in 2011, and as Google constantly tweaks their end of things, the same will hold true for a long time to come: Content is king. Beyond that, getting that content, with back links, on quality sites, blogs, directories, etc. will only help you win the popularity contest that is Google.
