Content: Reuse, Recycle, and Increase!

One of the most daunting challenges we've seen clients face is drafting content when overhauling an existing website. Many believe that because it's a "new" site, the content must be completely rewritten from scratch. Not true.

What can be done instead is a combination of re-purposing content from the existing website, as well as from other marketing collateral (brochures, sell sheets, annual reports, and so forth). Then -- and this is the most important aspect of content development -- the recycled content must be properly optimized for the search engines, based on the top 10 key terms that have been identified for best organic position on the search engines. And when we talk about the engines, we mean the four major players that account for 99% of Internet searches: Google, Yahoo, MSN and Bing.

Now, this may surprise you, but most likely, you'll need many more pages than the existing site contained. (Read: 5 pages just won't cut it for SEO.) Why? Because when it comes to indexing, content is king!

And the more well-written, SEO-friendly pages your site houses, the better your chances for being found on Page 1, organically.

IN SEARCH OF CONTENT MANAGEMENT //
CLOSED SOURCE vs. OPEN SOURCE?

When a company begins looking for a content management system (CMS) on which to house its new website -- and maintain complete control after it's launched -- the question that arises is this: What is the value of proprietary software when there are so many open source options available?

It's a good question, and one that every business owner should be asking when developing a website.

Open Source CMS vs Closed Source CMS

Open source content management systems include popular platforms like Wordpress, Drupal and Joomla, among others. The draw to open source is cost, plain and simple. There is no fee for the platform itself, though you'll probably need to hire a professional or web development firm that's well-versed in producing your new site on one of these platforms. Open source modules, or new features, upgrades, etc., are also available at no cost. Sounds great, right? Well, in most cases, this may be the best example of "you get what you pay for".

Proprietary software, on the other hand, is built using closed source code, such as Microsoft's ASP.NET (in the case of Couro CMS™). The scalability, security and stability of a closed source content management platform is vital to brand perception as it relates to customer comfort level and overall user experience.

Now, we're not arguing that open source CMS platforms don't have value -- because they do. However, they're more valuable to an individual looking to setup a blog, or a small to mid-sized non-profit organization.

For a professional business, the up-front investment in a stable, secure platform that can handle any custom design, offer unlimited functionality, and evolve in tandem with the company makes complete sense -- for the brand and for its bottom line.
