Keynote Speakers Workshop Schedule
Across the nation there are millions of residents living in publicly subsidized housing. In close proximity to many of these housing sites are health centers, some of which are federally funded Public Housing Primary Care programs that provide comprehensive primary health care services to residents of public housing and others of which are health centers that are seeking resources to better reach these residents to provide services.
The goal of the conference is to strengthen the capacity of health centers to meet the specialized primary care needs of residents of public housing. Conference participants will include health care professionals, staff of Primary Care Associations (PCA) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) staff, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) staff, public housing officials, residents, researchers and other key stakeholders.
The Health Care for Residents of Public Housing Training Conference is sponsored by the National Center for Health in Public Housing, North American Management and is supported by a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to provide training and technical assistance to the Health Center grantees.

New Release: NCHPH Board Governance Toolkit
|
Enabling services are non-clinical services that make it possible for patients to access preventive and primary health care services. Enabling services, which may include case management, referrals, translation/interpretation, transportation and health education, can play a major role in health care access and continuity of care. Health Leads is a national healthcare organization that places volunteers in clinics to help connect patients to the resources they need to be healthy. In the hospitals and health centers where Health Leads operates, doctors can "prescribe" food, housing, or other critical resources just as they would medication
The National Center for Health in Public Housing (NCHPH), a project of North American Management, announces the release of their new Board Governance Toolkit, which is now available for viewing on the NCHPH website. Governance is the process in which consumers and non-consumers participate in the oversight of health center operations. According to HRSA, agencies must have a governing board that consists of a majority (at least 51%) of individuals ("consumers" or "patients") who are or will receive their primary health care from the organization AND who as a group, represent the individuals being served by the organization in terms of race, ethnicity and gender. | North American Management's Grantees in Puerto Rico: Health and the Aging Report | | Most CHCs in Puerto Rico serve their elderly populations through involvement in the Health Disparities Collaborative program, since most of the patients affected by chronic diseases are elderly patients. Through this program, they provide education, self-management support, and continuous follow up to patients with diabetes and hypertension and, in some health centers, populations affected by asthma and depression. Nonetheless, not all patients participating in collaborative programs are elderly and not all elderly patients are participating. Another way of serving this population is through the health centers' social work, case management, and health education programs. Particularly, the social work area works in collaboration with community organizations to identify ways to respond to the specific needs identified among health center patients. HHS Secretary announces veterans' priority in health professions training grants
Two grant programs totaling more than $24 million will help veterans enter the health professions workforce and increase the nation's supply of advanced practice nurses and physician assistants, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today. These steps are part of the Administration's effort to help veterans find jobs here at home after they have fought for our country overseas. Last fall, the Administration announced that it would expand opportunities for veterans to enter health professions by giving funding priority to programs that help train veterans for careers as physician assistants and nursing schools that help veterans pursue nursing careers.
"Many veterans received training as health care providers while they served in the armed forces," said Secretary Sebelius. "The Obama administration is committed to helping these veterans translate the skills they learned in the military into a job when they return home."
These multi-year grants, administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), are part of the administration's initiative to increase the supply of primary care practitioners in the United States. To read more, click here.
