Thank a Military Spouse!
Military Spouse Appreciation Day - May 6, 2011
May 6, 2011 is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Home Front Hearts thanks military spouses worldwide! According to a recent Department of Defense Demographics Report, there are over 711,000 married Active Duty service members and over 411,000 married Reserve and Guard members. That's over one million military spouses worldwide!! Home Front Hearts knows that these military spouses serve alongside their service member and wants to thank military spouses worldwide for their dedication and sacrifice!
"At the heart of our Armed Forces, servicemembers' spouses keep our military families on track. They balance family life, military life, and their careers all while supporting other military families and giving back to their communities. Many have served in uniform themselves and, understanding the obligations involved, can provide unparalleled support. They are pillars of strength in their families, often celebrating their children's life milestones while the other parent is away."

Mary Beth* is a proud wife of an active duty soldier and mom to four beautiful children, ages 16, 11, 7, and 4. While her husband was last deployed to Afghanistan, she and her children resided in Washington State, where Mary Beth worked at a job she loved. With her nursing background and Masters in Social Work, she felt comfortable knowing that she would be able to help financially support her family as they moved for her husband's military career.
Recently diagnosed with breast cancer, Mary Beth was forced to leave her job and start aggressive treatment for her cancer - surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation - all while preparing the family to move to a new duty station across the country.
Going from two incomes to one, plus the additional expenses involved with moving, negatively impacted the family finances. Relocation was expensive - deposits needed to be paid, the children needed new clothes because of the warmer climate, and one of the children developed asthma. Still not medically cleared to return to work, Mary Beth was having a difficult time paying their bills. They were behind on their van payment, had little money for groceries, and were struggling to stay afloat.
Mary Beth didn't' know where that week's groceries were going to come from and barely had enough gas in the car to get down the street when she contacted Home Front Hearts and was extremely grateful for the quick response she received. Home Front Hearts Recommended by the Good People Fund and Featured in San Diego Media!
The Good People Fund was introduced to Home Front Hearts more than two years ago and in that time has watched proudly as the organization and its founder, Randi Cairns, have slowly evolved into an effective, compassionate advocate for our military families.
The primary focus of the Good People Fund is on organizations that are driven by individuals who are responding to a specific need in our world which they believe should be addressed. Randi Cairns is one such "good person," which makes her uniquely qualified to carry out the organization's mission. As a military wife, Randi knows first-hand just what the problems are and knows the best ways to solve them. Our country is currently engaged in several military conflicts with more and more soldiers and their families facing serious difficulties as a result of their service. For those who are fortunate to come to Home Front Hearts, the Good People Fund knows that Randi and her volunteers will go the extra mile to help solve those problems. We have seen it happen over and over again in our interaction with them.
Because of this recommendation, Home Front Hearts was part of the feature story, "The Fairy GoodMother," in The San Diego Jewish Journal's April 2011 issue. Click here to read the full story! A big thank you to The San Diego Jewish Journal as well as the Good People Fund.
