Autumn in the Garden
There are a few outdoor activities we should take care of to insure a healthy and colorful garden next spring. Some of us are happy when the snow flies and they can leave behind the gardening chores for a few months. Others use the quiet winter months to plan and dream of next year's garden. Either way, a few fall chores will help you to have a more beautiful garden next spring.
- Plant spring-flowering bulbs. Now is the time for planting tulips, daffodils, and all the spring-flowering beauties. The glorious spring colors we enjoy in April and May are a result of plantings installed the previous fall. Tulips can be planted as long as the soil can be dug. Make sure you water your bulbs in very well to insure a healthy plant next spring. Plant masses of a single color, many colors mixed together are not as showy.
- Use straw, dry leaves, or partially decomposed compost to mulch flowering perennials and bulbs once the soil begins to freeze. Many people believe that they are covering their perennials so that the plants will stay warm and cozy all winter. That is not the case. Most popular perennials can withstand our severe mid-winter temperatures. We actually cover the plants to maintain a constant cold temperature and keep the plants from the cycles of freezing and thawing that occur during the winter and early spring. Don't cover your garden until the soil is well frozen, because you are covering them to keep the cold in until April.
- Empty large outdoor containers and bring them indoors to a garage or basement to protect them from breakage from freezing and thawing during the winter.
- Wrap young, thin-barked shade trees with layers of tree wrap. This helps to prevent sun-scald caused by late-winter thawing temperatures during the day and freezing at night.
- Clean up your gardens by pulling out frost-killed annuals and cut back the tops of the perennials. It makes a clean and clear field for spring fertilizing, dividing and weeding. The empty spaces in the garden can be turned over and enhanced with peat moss or compost. It will save you time in the busy spring, and the added material will be well broken down for next year's planting.
- It's especially important this fall, after the dry summer that we've had, to make sure your evergreens and bulb plantings around your house are well-watered before the ground freezes. Many outdoor plants will show signs of winter burn next year if they are allowed to go into the winter dry.

Fall is the Best Time to Feed Your Lawn
Lawn experts maintain that the fall feeding of lawns is the most important of the year. The rhizomes (spreading, underground roots) are actively growing at this time. These rhizomes fill the bare spots and thicken the lawn in general. Also, the tillers (the buds for next year's grass blades) are formed in the fall and adequate nutrition ensures a fuller and early greening lawn the following spring
Fertilome has developed a lawn nutrition called "Winterizer". It has an analysis of 10-0-14 and provides the nutrition for rhizome and tiller development, and also prepares the lawn for the dormant winter season. The 14% potash is a factor in this accomplishment. It aids in hardening of late fall growth, and promotes sturdiness in plants weakened by rapid soft growth. It also helps in lessening the lawn's susceptibility to lawn diseases such as snow mold which occurs in the spring. An application of this type of fertilizer will continue feeding into the spring and your lawn should come out earlier and greener.
A winterizing type fertilizer is recommended to be applied before the grass is dormant, late August through September and into October. Research has shown that if you can only afford to feed your lawn once a year, the fall feeding is the most beneficial.

Moso Bamboo Charcoal Bags
When unpleasant odors permeate a room, it is inevitable for most to reach for a common air freshening spray in order to neutralize the smell. Most of these remedies do not attack the odors, but rather cover them up with additional scents. Fortunately, Moso Natural has produced air purifying bags that absorb and filter out not only odors, but also harmful pollutants, allergens, bacteria and dehumidifies to prevent mildew, mold and moisture. Made from 100% bamboo charcoal, Moso Bags are a fragrance free, non-toxic, and eco-friendly air purifier which will work to remove impurities in the air for up to two years.
Known throughout the Far East as a natural healing property, the bamboo charcoal helps remove microscopic airborne bacteria and allergens by trapping the impurities inside its porous structure, reducing excessive moisture to prevent mold and mildew. Place a Moso Bag anywhere odors, bacteria, harmful pollutants, allergens, mold, mildew or moisture may accumulate including closets, bathrooms, pet areas, and cars. Rejuvenate the Moso Bag by leaving it in direct sunlight for at least one hour per month. What is more, once the Moso Bag is no longer useful in living areas, cut the bag open and spread the bamboo charcoal into your garden!
Moso Bags are available in three natural colors and two separate sizes, perfect for every room in the home. The 200g Moso Bag is ideal for smaller areas covering approximately 90 square feet while the 500g Moso Bag is ideal for larger living covering approximately 250 square feet.
Moso Natural Bags are now available at Forth Floral.
