Wellness Tip: More is Less | |
Did you know that increasing certain things in your life and diet could actually help you lose weight? Increasing daily activity and sleep to recommended levels have both been shown to help with weight management. Furthermore, drinking more water, consuming more fruits, vegetables and other high-fiber foods, and starting the day with breakfast can all impact your ability to lose the weight. A weight-loss plan based on deprivation is unlikely to result in sustainable success, so consider healthy ways to add more into your life in order to decrease body fat.

Community Partner Spotlight: Operation Breakthrough
In January, Truman Medical Centers will partner with Operation Breakthrough and the UMKC School of Nursing to provide adult health services at the Helen Gragg Clinic at Operation Breakthrough.
Operation Breakthrough, at 31st and Troost, is the state's largest child care center, providing a safe, loving and educational environment for more than 600 children daily. More than 98% of the enrolled families live below the federal poverty guidelines, most far below them.
In 2004, a free clinic was started at Operation Breakthrough to serve those with limited access to health care. The Helen Gragg Clinic, named for the first employee and avid volunteer for Operation Breakthrough, provides services for parents at the center.
Please join us as we recognize a great community partner in the Kansas City community, Operation Breakthrough. If you would like information or would like to volunteer your time to this great cause, please click here. |
A Better Weigh - A Big Success
Several Truman Medical Centers employees were able to lose weight thanks to a unique program through TMC Employee Wellness. TMC's A Better Weigh program was designed to benefit employees who needed to lose a significant amount of weight and who have had limited or temporary success losing it in the past. Seven finalists competed over the course of 10 weeks supported by a team of coaches including a physician, registered dietician, wellness coach, fitness coach, and mentor. Nine additional employees competed as "Challengers"- attending many of the programs and striving for similar goals, but without the added benefit of personalized weekly case management and coaching. At the end of the 10 weeks, the group of seven lost a total of 175 pounds; including the Challengers, the 16 finishers lost 234.75 pounds. In addition to the weight loss, they were able to increase cardiac fitness, improve cholesterol, stop taking diabetes medications, improve blood pressure, received useful consultation and lifelong wellness tools for success. |
