One Up High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is not inevitable, and is never good for your health. It is one of the best indicators of overall health and a great predictor of your risk of illness. Simple changes in diet, exercise and the way we handle stress can do wonders for lowering blood pressure to healthy levels. Studies show that making just one healthy change can significantly lower your risk of heart disease - just one.

Bluford and SebeliusSecretary Sebelius Visits TMC

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius joined hospital officials, doctors, nurses, patients, and other health care advocates at Truman Medical Center Hospital Hill for a tour and panel discussion on September 30.

Her visit centered around the Partnership for Patients, a national initiative emphasizing safer, more reliable and less costly healthcare for patients.

The event was the eighth in a series of hospital visits around the country the Secretary is making to highlight centers of excellence as a part of the Partnership for Patients. Click here to learn more about her visit.
TMC Lakewood Family Birthplace Welcomes its First Special Delivery

TMC Lakewood opened the newly expanded and renovated Lakewood Family Birthplace on Oct. 16 with the arrival of its first special delivery. Emma Nicole Steele was born at 7:46 pm, making her the first baby born in the spacious, family-centered Lakewood Family Birthplace.

The space includes a private, four-bed triage area for the early stages of labor, fetal monitoring telemetry allowing moms to walk during labor, epidural pain-management available 24/7 and two dedicated operating rooms so mothers never have to leave the unit once they arrive. Learn more about the Lakewood Family Birthplace.

TeocaliCommunity Partner Spotlight: Teocali Restaurant

Teocali Mexican Restaurant, one of TMC's newest community partners, has worked with TMC Community Outreach to create healthier menu items. Teocali, at 2512 Holmes St., was established in August of 2006 by Enrique and Chela Gutierrez and they have been bringing authentic Mexican cuisine to the Kansas City metro ever since. The restaurant has a very diverse menu with delicious authentic Mexican food, including the TMC-approved menu items. These items are low on fats and high on healthy, including entradas, mariscos, and vegetarian plates. Go to Teocali.com to see their entire menu.

Teocali recently was featured as one of the stops on the KC Latino World Food Tour, one of 10 restaurants included in the event.

Wellness CenterSmith Wellness Center Now Open

The Ralph L. Smith Wellness Center is now open to TMC employees. This new wellness center, located on the ground floor of the Health Sciences Building, is a 2,400 square foot space that includes a mix of cardio and strength equipment, a group fitness area, and men's and women's locker and shower facilities. This on-site wellness center will be one more avenue to assist employees in reaching their personal health and wellness goals.

The Smith Wellness Center was made possible by a generous donation from the Ralph L. Smith Foundation, and its executors, Neil and Fran Douthat. TMC would like to extend their gratitude to the Smith Foundation and the Douthats.
