Wellness Tip:
Beat the Heat

Exercising in extreme heat puts extra stress on the body. But don't give up on exercise - look for alternatives to get fit and stay cool.

Swimming and playing in the water can be an excellent way to get in shape without overheating.

Take advantage of local community centers and gyms. Join a game of indoor basketball, participate in the scheduled kids activities, or try a fitness class.

Lace up those sneakers and turn your local mall into a track. Many malls open early for morning walkers.

Welcome to

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT!

Greetings!

Truman Medical Centers is committed to improving the quality of life in Kansas City and the surrounding communities through its department of Community Engagement.
Here is the latest news in our efforts to lead the way to a healthier community.

Touchdown Family Fest

TFF
Truman Medical Centers presented the first Touchdown Family Fest (TFF) at Arrowhead on July  16. More than 1,000 attendees received free health services such as immunizations, sports physicals, cholesterol screenings, and  more. Special guests like Olympian Muna Lee and dancers from Denise's Dance Academy gave fitness demonstrations and created a fun family atmosphere. A flash-mob took place to Beyonce's Let's Move! Grandma's Office Catering and La Tropicana provided attendees with healthy and delicious food offerings. TFF was a great event and it showcased the excellent services TMC offers while highlighting the strong relationships TMC has with its community partners. Thank you to all our sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and attendees for making this event a tremendous success!

TMC Is up For The Challenge!

Truman Medical Centers has joined the KC Slimdown Challenge, presented by Cerner Health. The 10-week weight loss competition runs from July 25 to October 1. Within KC Slimdown, there are two challenges: the Community Challenge and the Employer Challenge. In the Employer Challenge, organizations from around the metro compete for bragging rights. TMC will sponsor prizes for employees who participate. In the Community Challenge, individuals form teams of 4-6 people and compete for prizes sponsored by Cerner. In this challenge, you can create a team with anyone from the community. Prizes for this challenge include a weekend getaway to the Scottsdale Hyatt!

TMC hosted the first weigh-in on July 11, where more than 230 employees signed up for the challenge. In addition weigh-ins were held at TMC Lakewood and Truman Technology Center. Employee Wellness will be providing weight loss tips and encouragement for participants.

Evening Under The Stars

EUS

TMC Lakewood Auxiliary invites you to an "Evening Under the Stars on" Saturday August 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Lakewood atrium.

This is a wine and food tasting event designed to raise funds for the Family Birthplace at TMC Lakewood. There also is a silent auction. One of the big auction items this year is a charter flight to fly with the Kansas City Chiefs to a regular season away game!

This year's dress is "creative black tie"  - from tuxedos with sneakers to cocktail dresses with flip flops. The more creative the better!

Pet Partners Is Expanding

Pet Partners, launched at TMC Hospital Hill in the spring, will expand to TMC Behavioral Health New Frontier's program in August. Pet Partners is a unique therapeutic program that brings pets into healthcare facilities. Research has shown that pet therapy can lower blood pressure and boost people's moods and enhance their social interactions.

Patients on our medical floors are already benefitting from the Pet Partners program. Now our clients in Behavioral Health will soon reap the same rewards. Animals provide a constant source of comfort and focus for attention. These benefits fit perfectly with goals we are striving for with our clients, says Ron Tankel, director of New Frontiers.
