The Anatomy of Poverty:
Board Retreat Hosts Discussion on National Issue
Poverty was the topic of TMC's annual educational board retreat in May. Keynote speaker Dr. David R. Williams, an African-American studies professor at Harvard University, delivered a fascinating presentation on the connection between poverty and the well-being and health of a community. Click here for a link to his presentation.
A panel discussion followed the keynote talk, featuring James Corwin Kansas City, Mo., police chief; Dr. John W. Covington, Kansas City, Mo, school superintendent; and Joe Reardon, Kansas City, Kansas mayor. The panel was moderated by Elizabeth Alex, KSHB news anchor. |

TMC at Fiesta KC
Truman Medical Centers had a strong presence at this year's Fiesta KC. TMC served as a t-shirt sponsor for this year's event, held at Crown Center May 13-15. The TMC Mobile Wellness Van conducted screenings, and through our partnership with Kansas City Chiefs, we were able to provide appearances by several Chiefs cheerleaders, KC Wolf and KC Chiefs ambassadors.
There were more than 100 food and vendor booths at this year's Fiesta. The Family Fun Zone doubled in size in order to allow children the opportunity to experience a wide variety of activities. Mattie Rhodes offered games, a bungee run and slide, face painting, inflatables, and art activities. |
TMC Teams Up With Copaken Brooks and Athletic & Rehabilitation Center
Copaken Brooks is opening a workout facility at Town Pavilion for its estimated 5,000 office tenants in downtown Kansas City. The 4,000-square-foot fitness center will be the centerpiece of a wellness program Copaken Brooks is launching in conjunction with Truman Medical Centers and Athletic & Rehabilitation Center.
Bernadette Harrity, director of employee health and wellness for TMC, said the Copaken program is the first of its kind in Kansas City. "This is a unique partnership in terms of working with all of their tenant groups. It allows them to be able to join forces and take advantage of some things that a smaller employer alone wouldn't be able to do," Harrity said.
Any Copaken Brooks tenant in Town Pavilion, 1201 Walnut Street, or the Harzfeld Building will have free use of the workout facility through the end of 2011. Medical experts from TMC will lead on-site wellness workshops.
