Community Health Education Partner Spotlight

Leon's Thriftway

Leon's Thriftway, originally purchased in 1968 by Leon and Willosia Stapleton, was then and remains the only African-American owned supermarket in the Kansas City metropolitan area and the oldest African American owned grocery store in the United States.

In the Bag is a partnership with Leon's Thriftway and TMC, creating meal plans with suggestions on how to eat healthier within a budget.  The 7-day meal plan offers suggested meals and recipes for modifying comfort foods making them healthier.   In addition to the meal plan, in-store seasonal events support TMC's mission to lead the community in wellness.

Truman Medical Center's Hospital Hill Economic Development Center will focus on creative and innovative practices as it addresses civic activities to promote healthy

lifestyle behaviors in the community.  The anchor project will be an urban grocery market slated to promote health and nutrition among residents in the urban core.

Why does TMC need an Economic Development Center? Visit Community Engagement at trumed.org for more.

MO-KAN Pets Coming to TMC
The Mo-Kan Pet Partners will be coming to TMC's Hospital Hill campus in the beginning of May! Through the Pet Partners program, TMC patients will have the opportunity to interact with dogs one-on-one and in a group setting. The Pet Partners team, consisting of the dog and the owner, will be escorted around Hospital Hill by a TMC volunteer. The Pet Partners program will help TMC enrich the patient experience, enhance the overall environment, and potentially improve patient outcomes. Visit the MO-KAN Pet Partners website for more information on this innovative program.
