Sanctuary Project Image
Upcoming Facility Changes

As the weather cooperates, the sanctuary window project will get underway soon! Thank you to all who have generously given toward this project! With that, the ongoing finishes to the worship space will follow. We look forward to the ways that our "house" can continue to be a hospitable space for worship, community life, and service.

Also, with the break in program for the summer comes time to do a few housekeeping changes, not least among them: cleaning out closets, reorganizing program supplies, etc! Many of these projects were jump-started by installation of the new carpet, and now we can continue to adapt the space to our growing needs as a community.

Staff will also be working on a couple of room changes. The current youth room will be converted into another neutral meeting space, and third room in the annex will become the new youth room!

If you have gently-used furniture that needs a home, please contact a staff-member. As the changes take shape, we can assess what might help make these rooms most hospitable.

In Memory of Frank Atwood...

Roy Franklin Atwood, Jr., 84 years old, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 9, 2011. Frank was a lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Frank grew up in Ellensburg, WA and enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was still only seventeen. In his Army career Frank received several decorations, the highest being the Legion of Merit.

Frank was a political science major at Washington State University and graduated in 1949. He went on to attend the University of Washington Law School, and became a prominent attorney in Bellingham. A political career followed, including City Council and the office of State Senator.

A former colleague, James Anderson, who served with Frank in the Senate, and is now retired Chief Justice of the State of Washington Supreme Court, said it best, "Frank is an outstanding example of a generation of courage, integrity and principle. He grew up in the Depression, served his country in the Armed Forces and established himself in his chosen profession. He served with distinction in the public sector during the era of the true citizen legislature - where you served your fellow citizens because you believed that public service was the highest calling."

Frank leaves to survive, his wife Marie Atwood; daughter Deborah Atwood and her husband, Robert Hyman of Washington, DC; son Roy Franklin Atwood, III and his wife, Julie of Graham, Washington; and daughter Suzanne and her husband Mitchell Bleicher of Voorhees, NJ. Frank is survived by five grand children, Victoria Atwood, Thomas Atwood, Erica Bleicher, Jane Bleicher and Isaac Bleicher.

A memorial service to celebrate Frank's life is scheduled for Friday, August 12 at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Bellingham, Washington. Donations should be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation "Fund a Cure"; Seattle Guild Office; 1215 Fourth Ave, Suite 1400; Seattle, WA, 98161 or your favorite charity.

Faith Community Garden

While full of the challenges of a cold spring and chilly summer (so far!) our first summer season in the community garden is underway! Community and parish members are growing lettuce, tomatoes, squash, beans, herbs, beets, and many other kinds of delicious local produce!

Garden July Image

The water faucets were installed by more of our trusty volunteers, and cedar wood chips are being spread on the pathways. We continue to whittle away at the list of chores, yet considering the scope of the project, we are grateful beyond measure for the incredible dedication shown by many volunteer hands toward the realization of creating this community space!

We are currently seeking to fill the volunteer position of "Community Garden Coordinator." This position would be someone who would work alongside the church staff-member assigned to the garden to continue creatively realizing the garden's goals through this season and into the coming year! If you or anyone you know might be interested, please see contact email below.

Global Consciousness:

 The Somalian Refugee Crisis

 and the Lutheran World Federation

As Lutherans (and simply, as humans) our awareness of the ways in which brothers and sisters across the globe face crisis and suffering are crucial to our understanding of ourselves, our communities, and our world.

Currently, the Lutheran World Federation is managing (in partnership with others) the growing, enormous (over 360,000) refugee camp on the border of Kenya and Somalia, where hundreds of Somalian refugees are fleeing daily from drought, farm and livestock devastation, and growing regional instability.

The situation is dire, with more people than food, clean water, and health services can reach, yet the relief work continues. Below is a news release from the LWF website detailing the situation (for a direct link to the online article, click here ). Please pray. Please give. Donations to the Lutheran World Relief can be made online at: http://www.lutheranworld.org/lwf/index.php/ways-to-give .

"LWF Scales up Intervention in Camp for Somali Refugees"

Water Accessibility, Child Malnutrition Are Major Challenges

DADAAB, Northeastern Kenya/GENEVA, 13 July (LWI) - Interviews conducted by The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) staff at the Dadaab refugee camp show that newly arriving people from neighboring Somalia have walked on the average for 15 days before reaching the site.

"Most of the people arriving are dehydrated and very hungry. Many lack clothing and are barefoot," says Mr Lennart Hernander, LWF Department for World Service (DWS) representative for the Kenya/Djibouti program.

The LWF manages the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) camp, and is also filling in gaps occasioned by the high influx of arrivals estimated at 1,300 daily.

Drought and Insecurity

The main reason for fleeing is the prolonged drought that led to failed harvests and dying animals, coupled with growing insecurity inside Somalia. The influx of new refugees began to increase early 2011, and has since escalated.

The total number of refugees that were registered in the three refugee camps that make up Dadaab (Dagahale, Ifo and Hagadera) between January and May 2011 was 46,852 persons. In June alone, another 38,514 were received, the LWF representative says of the 20-year-old camp, currently hosting some 360,000 people.

Numbers Hamper Registration

The high numbers also slow down the refugee registration process, which was initially planned for three days-from the first contact at the reception centers to the registration center and back to the camps to receive food, non-food items (NFIs) and firewood.

Currently, a 15-day dry food ration per person is provided by the World Food Program at the reception centers along with items such as cooking pots, mats, jerry cans and plastic sheets. The delay in processing means that many refugees who haven't received services such as tents end up living in small, unsafe makeshift shelters.

The Dagahaley host community has been assisting through their religious leaders with clothing and shoes, but the gap is still big very big, Hernander notes.

He points to the high levels of malnutrition among children. Out of a total of 6,548 children under five screened at the camp's reception centers in June, an average of 17 percent were moderately malnourished, 10.5 percent showed severe cases of malnutrition and 2.25 percent were severely malnourished with medical complications.

Prioritizing Most Vulnerable

The LWF undertakes a "vulnerability assessment" of refugees upon arrival to identify persons with disabilities or social vulnerabilities, female-headed households, unaccompanied minors, separated children and unaccompanied elderly persons. These more vulnerable people are then prioritized for registration and issuance of ration cards.

Discussions are underway with the agencies involved to strengthen the screening, identification and referral system at the registration and documentation points for appropriate interventions and follow up in the three camps, says Hernander.

The LWF is putting up a temporary structure at the registration points where, together with other agencies, assessment of the most vulnerable groups will be conducted. Upon identification, LWF social workers make home visits and recommend further assistance.

The LWF has procured nine tons of flour mix for supplementary feeding of children and elderly who have been identified as too weak to eat dry food. Distribution of clothes, slippers and sanitary wear for women is also planned.

Water Access Challenging

Water remains a major challenge for the camp and host community because taps are few and there is a limit on the volume that can be pumped from existing boreholes. In addition to the other main partners providing water, the LWF has started bringing in water with a 7,000-liter truck as a short-term measure.

Hernander mentions plans to increase coordinated information-sharing to reach all newly arrived refugees settled in the outskirts. The aim is to highlight life-saving issues like attention to malnutrition and access to basic services.

The UNHCR has asked the LWF to extend basic services, including layout of family plots, provision of water and sanitation, healthcare, emergency shelter, education and security in a more coordinated manner on the outskirts of the camps in consultation with the host community.

Hernander says there are reports that the Somali town of Dhobley, near the Kenyan border, continues to receive several hundreds of new refugees daily. "These are people that are likely to continue across the border, trying to find their way to Dadaab," he adds.

Insecurity in Somalia

He points out that the security situation currently does not allow assistance along the Somali border refugee route. The LWF will be part of a joint mission planned next week by the UNHCR Protection Team to Liboi, Kenya, some 18 kilometers west of the Somali border.

The LWF representative expresses gratitude for the support received toward assisting those affected by drought and fleeing insecurity, including through the global humanitarian organization ACT Alliance of which the LWF is a member.

Summer is a time when staff and volunteers spend countless hours planning and preparing for the coming program year. We are very excited to be embarking on another year of Godly Play as the Sunday morning program for the children.

We are sending some of our volunteers to a core training event for Godly Play, being held at St. Paul's Episcopal in August. This accredited training is a three-day event, which provides background, theory, practice, and experience to adult volunteers in the Godly Play program.

In addition to planning for the coming year, summers also bring lots of family time at Faith. Join us any Wednesday night for dinner and prayer (6pm/6:45pm), and you will likely meet some of our spirited youngest members! We seek to provide an environment in which the children are a valued and integrated part of our community life!

Middle & High School Youth
 OR Youth Trip Image
Recently Faith's Youth (Middle and High Schoolers) went on a retreat to the Oregon Coast themed "At the Water's Edge." Eight youth and three adults filled the church van and headed south to a cabin right on the Oregon Coast, near Lincoln City. Amongst activities like extreme dune-buggy rides, a visit to the Newport Aquarium, and a hike down to some tide-flats, the groups spent lots of time running around on the beach, leading morning and evening prayers, engaging in morning discussions on the person of Jesus, gathering around the firepit, and enjoying each other and the intensity of being oceanside!

Relationships were fostered, leadership was developed, and dialogue was cultivated. These are all aspects of the youth program here at Faith--ways that we practice being a faith-based community of youth in an ever-changing world.

Through trips, such as our retreat to Oregon, and through ongoing youth activities, events, and service projects, we seek to get to know the person of Jesus, as well as ourselves--understanding in new ways who we are and whose we are.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the youth program at Faith!

A Note From the Pastor
By Pastor Sharon Swanson

Brothers and Sisters,

Thank you for all of your prayers for our family and my daughter, Katy, as she underwent surgery recently. I am pleased to report that she is making a thorough recovery, is doing well, and has returned to work! Your thoughts and prayers have been appreciated.

I also appreciate your prayers for Steve, who is heading back to Holden Village, as a full-time staff person there.

As I have just returned from two weeks of vacation time, I look forward to the planning that lies ahead, as we get ourselves organized for the coming program year. In the meantime, I invite you to worship with us this summer, to take part in the exciting Wednesday summer discussion series on "Faith-Based Advocacy," take a walk in the community garden, and consider how you might choose to be involved in the coming year.

God's peace to you all!

Sharon
