Faith's Community Garden
We are at a time in the church when attendance on a Sunday morning is no longer the obvious, or the only way to be involved. As an outreach to our neighbors and community, Faith has been looking into having a community garden. Recent statistics have shown that there are over 6,000 people living within one mile of Faith that are either in apartments or condos.
In addition to using the garden as a way to reach out to our neighbors, it would also be available to benefit people in our parish and the Ukrainian congregation who may not have access to land on which to grow fresh fruit or vegetables. Our plan is to fence in an area of approximately 50x 175 feet where we will install a garden with a number or raised beds, which will be made available for use by members, neighbors and friends of the parish.
The main intent of the garden will be for people to grow food for their own tables, but some of the produce generated will be used in parish meal programs with the surplus going to the Bellingham Food Bank. In addition, we have already had substantial interest from some of our neighbors who have been on the planning committee, as well as several local/neighborhood businesses and organizations.
The congregation will be voting on the garden in January at the annual meeting. Edward Alexander and/or Rochelle Wolber will be available after most services between now and then to answer any questions you may have.
Faith has recently received a very generous anonymous donation, some of which has been designated as seed money for initial ground work (watering system, etc.) for Faith's community garden. With these funds, as well as local grant money, the community garden could be ready for planting this spring! We are grateful and excited to provide a place for community members to plant and grow fresh, healthy food, as yet another effort toward addressing local hunger.

Education Opportunities
Please note the following changes and additions to the education schedule, noting dates for new studies!
Sunday Morning Adult Forum: Book Study
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Relin
Sundays, 8:45 am
January 9, 16, 23, 2011
This book was referenced repeatedly by the authors of Eclipsing Empire, the study on Paul recently completed during the Sunday Adult Forum. It is an inspiring account of one man's campaign to build schools in the most dangerous, remote, and anti-American reaches of Asia.
Join Pam Behee and others, Sunday mornings in the Gathering Room, to discuss this important book and its implications for our own faith journeys.
Women's Bible Study
Matthew's Story of Jesus
With Pastor Sharon Swanson
Thursdays, 7:00 pm
Beginning January 27, 2011--6 week study
All women are welcome! Please join us in the Gathering Room on Thursday evenings to enjoy each other's company and to explore the gospel of Matthew together.
The Revelation to John
Wednesdays, 10:30 am
Beginning February 9, 2011--4 week study.
This book has a deserved reputation for being a happy hunting ground for people with pet theories about contemporary politics and precise timetables concerning the end of the world as we know it. The book of Revelation has also been the great shaper of the Christian imagination across the centuries, reflected in art, music, novels, poetry and film. Everyone has a different opinion and questions. Now's the time to talk about it!
Renee King will facilitate a conversation on the Book of Revelation on Wednesday mornings in the Gathering Room. Everyone is welcome. Bring your Bibles.

Godly Play Training Workshop
Saturday, January 29, 2011 10:00 am - 3:00pm
As many of you know, we began using Godly Play (a Montessori-based Sunday School curriculum) for the young children in September. The curriculum is centered around active story-telling. The stories are designed with great care to invite the children into their own questions. The room is set up with two adults--a storyteller and a door person--both very intentional roles.
We are currently looking for people who are able to join our Godly Play team of storytellers and door persons. In order to get plugged into the program, this training is a great start!
Please consider signing up for this training, facilitated by Lindsay Knight (Director of Education and Godly Play @ St. Paul's Episcopal) and Jessie Twigg-Harris (Faith's Youth & Family Coordinator). Lunch and childcare will be provided.
Contact Jessie for questions or to sign up for the training.

Youth Fundraising
As plans continue to take shape for events and trips in the coming months, the youth have been busy selling the Peace Shirts! The fundraiser continues to bring in profit, and with another color wave of t-shirts in the works, we hope to continue to offer them to the parish and community! Just before Christmas, baby onesies and more child's sizes were printed too!! These make fantastic gifts for anyone. If you haven't yet purchased yours, please contact any middle or high school person or Youth Coordinator, Jessie Twigg-Harris.

A Note From the Pastor
By Pastor Sharon Swanson
" I spoke like one in a dream. For I looked at the Child. And all about him lay the shadow of death, and all within him was the light of life; and I knew that I stood in the presence of the Mortal-Immortal, which is the last secret of the universe."
Thus speaks Balthazar in Dorothy L. Sayer's play-cycle, "The Man Born To Be King." Epiphany brings to mind the mysterious visitors from foreign lands that were guided by the brightest star of all to see the Christ Child.
Epiphany means "manifestation." On this day we celebrate the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles--that is, to all the nations. There are some Christian traditions which celebrate three great Epiphanies on this day: the adoration of the Magi, Jesus' baptism in the River Jordan, and the Wedding Feast in Cana in which Jesus performs his first miracle by turning water into wine.
We have been gathering on Wednesdays through Advent season for prayer in the chapel. At the end of each service we have sung "This Little Light of Mine."
Epiphany is symbolized by light--starlight, candlelight, and the Light of Christ. How shall we as a congregation let our light shine forth in the coming year?
Blessings and peace to you all,
Sharon
